Nina Hudson Turner (born December 7, 1967) is an American politician and professor from Ohio. A member of the Democratic Party, she was a Cleveland City Councillor from 2006 to 2008 and an Ohio State Senator from 2008 until 2014.
She was the Democratic candidate for Ohio Secretary of State in 2014 but lost in the general election, garnering 35.5 percent of the vote. She was later a surrogate for Bernie Sanders in his 2016 presidential campaign. In 2016, she was also offered the role of vice presidential running mate by Green Party presidential nominee Jill Stein but declined. In 2017, Turner became president of the Sanders-affiliated group Our Revolution. On February 21, 2019, Turner was named a national co-chair of Sanders's 2020 campaign.
Turner is a native of Cleveland, Ohio. She was born Nina Hudson to teen parents, the first of seven children. Her father and mother had split up by the time she was five. At 14, she began working part-time jobs, giving "every dime" she earned to her mother. She graduated from Cleveland's John F. Kennedy High School in 1986.
She did not continue her education immediately, instead taking a variety of jobs, including working at a fast food outlet and a Payless shoe store. While at Payless, she met Jeffery Turner, whom she later married. Subsequently, she returned to school to earn an Associate in Arts degree from Cuyahoga Community College, where she is now a tenured assistant professor of history. Her mother, who had been struggling with high blood pressure all her life, died in 1992 at the age of 42. Turner completed her degree, followed by a Bachelor of Arts degree in history and then a Master of Arts degree in 1997 from Cleveland State University. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nina_Turner

NINA SIMONE

She was one of the most extraordinary artists of the twentieth century, an icon of American music. She was the consummate musical storyteller, a griot as she would come to learn, who used her remarkable talent to create a legacy of liberation, empowerment, passion, and love through a magnificent body of works. She earned the moniker ‘High Priestess of Soul’ for she could weave a spell so seductive and hypnotic that the listener lost track of time and space as they became absorbed in the moment. She was who the world would come to know as Nina Simone. When Nina Simone died on April 21, 2003, she left a timeless treasure trove of musical magic spanning over four decades from her first hit, the 1959 Top 10 classic “I Loves You Porgy,” to “A Single Woman,” the title cut from her one and only 1993 Elektra album. While thirty-three years separate those recordings, the element of honest emotion is the glue that binds the two together – it is that approach to every piece of work that became Nina’s uncompromising musical trademark. By the end of her life, Nina was enjoying an unprecedented degree of recognition. Her music was enjoyed by the masses due to the CD revolution, discovery on the Internet, and exposure through movies and television. Nina had sold over one million CDs in the last decade of her life, making her a global catalog best-seller. No one website can fully explore the many nuances and flavors that made up the more than 40 original albums in the Nina Simone library. This site and accompanying radio station contain many of Nina’s finest works. However, we might not have had the chance to witness the breathtaking range of material Nina could cover if she hadn’t taken the path she did. Born Eunice Kathleen Waymon in Tryon, North Carolina on February 21st, 1933, Nina’s prodigious talent as a musician was evident early on when she started playing piano by ear at the age of three. . . . www.ninasimone.com/bio/

  1. "A Raised Voice: How Nina Simone turned the movement into music." Claudia Roth Pierpont, Thenyewyorker.com. August 3, 2014. "My skin is black,” the first woman’s story begins, “my arms are long.” And, to a slow and steady beat, “my hair is woolly, my back is strong.” Singing in a club in Holland, in 1965, Nina Simone introduced a song she had written about what she called “four Negro women” to a young, homogeneously white, and transfixed crowd. “And one of the women’s hair,” she instructed, brushing her hand lightly across her own woolly Afro, “is like mine.” Every performance of “Four Women” caught on film (as here) or disk is different. Sometimes Simone coolly chants the first three women’s parts—the effect is of resigned weariness—and at other times, as on this particular night, she gives each woman an individual, sharply dramatized voice. All four have names. Aunt Sarah is old, and her strong back has allowed her only “to take the pain inflicted again and again.” Sephronia’s yellow skin and long hair are the result of her rich white father having raped her mother—“Between two worlds I do belong”—and Sweet Thing, a prostitute, has tan skin and a smiling bravado that seduced at least some of the eager Dutch listeners into the mistake of smiling, too. And then Simone hit them with the last and most resolutely up to date of the women, improbably named Peaches. “My skin is brown,” she growled ferociously, “my manner is tough. I’ll kill the first mother I see. ’Cause my life has been rough.” (One has to wonder what the Dutch made of killing that “mother.”) If Simone’s song suggests a history of black women in America, it is also a history of long-suppressed and finally uncontainable anger. https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2014/08/11/raised-voice
  2. "Nina Simone’s Time Is Now, Again." Nytimes.com. June 21, 2015. The feminist writer Germaine Greer once declared: “Every generation has to discover Nina Simone. She is evidence that female genius is real. https://www.nytimes.com/2015/06/21/movies/nina-simones-time-is-now-again.html
  3. "Nina Simone." Natelegé Whaley, Mic.com. May 2, 2019. Nina Simone was a singer, musician and a freedom fighter during the civil rights movement. Often called the “high priestess of soul,” she was a black musical genius unafraid of tackling politics, but this meant her life was filled with difficulty. She risked her popularity at the height of her career for the liberation of the African diaspora. There weren’t many spaces made for Simone, but she transformed every space she touched. She also inspired many musical artists, from Aretha Franklin to Lauryn Hill to Mary J. Blige. https://www.mic.com/articles/186976
  4. "Why the Color of Nina Simone's Skin Is as Important as the Sound of Her Voice." Brit Julious, Pitchfork.com. March 10, 2016. On April 22nd, Nina, a movie inspired by — but not an accurate reflection of — Nina Simone will be released in theaters. Starring Zoe Saldana, a black Latina actress best known for her roles in Avatar and Guardians of the Galaxy, Nina continues to court controversy years after the project was first announced and filmed. Last week, after initial images of Saldana — in dark makeup and a prosthetic nose — as Simone appeared in the first trailer, the debate was not only reignited but doused in butane with a single tweet from Simone's official account (Simone's daughter was a little more diplomatic regarding Saldana specifically, though not the film). https://pitchfork.com/thepitch/1050-why-the-color-of-nina-simones-skin-is-as-important-as-the-sound-of-her-voice/

In August, numerous North Carolina cultural institutions came together to raise funds to preserve Nina Simone's childhood home in Tryon, N.C. The building, which was scheduled for demolition, was purchased in 2017 by four New York City-based artists who, in 2018, were able to get the building designated as a National Treasure by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. MERLINE JOHNSON

During the late '30s, one Chicago-based blues woman cut more records than either Memphis Minnie or Georgia White, and even edged in on Blue Lu Barker with a smart cover of her most famous hit, "Don't You Make Me High." The aunt of R&B vocalist LaVern Baker, Merline Johnson was usually billed as the Yas Yas Girl, a bawdy nickname that utilized a favorite early blues euphemism for your butt. Little is known of this singer's origins, her life during a brief but productive heyday, or her eventual fate. Legend has it she first saw the light of day somewhere in the state of Mississippi during the year 1912. https://www.allmusic.com/artist/merline-johnson-mn0000447148/biography

ELLA ANDALL

Andall was born in Grenada—one dare not ask the date—and moved to Trinidad when she was eight or nine. She found Trinidad extremely different from Grenada. For the first time, she encountered a discomfort with “blackness”, and distrust of anything “too African”. But she had been raised in a home and a family that had inherited the West African traditions of her ancestors, and she studiously resisted any attempts to remove her from those traditions, even refusing to sing in school choirs where she would be made to sing differently. Andall is an olorisha, or Orisha devotee. It is a way of life that celebrates the ancestors and the divine in nature, with various aspects and forces of the natural world represented in the Orisha, who are each a manifestation of God, or Olodumare. . . .

CELIA CRUZ

Úrsula Hilaria Celia de la Caridad Cruz Alfonso (October 21, 1925 – July 16, 2003), known simply and professionally as Celia Cruz, was a Cuban singer and the most popular Latin artist of the 20th century. Cruz was renowned internationally as the "Queen of Salsa",

"La Guarachera de Cuba", as well as "The Queen of Latin Music".
Throughout her career, Celia Cruz interpreted and internationally popularized tropical rhythms such as Son, Guaguancó, Rumba, Guaracha and Bolero. However, the genre that led to stardom was Salsa.

Celia Cruz and La Sonora Matancera.

Celia_Cruz_y_La_Sonora_Matancera.jpg#/media/File:Celia_Cruz_y_La_Sonora_Matancera.jpg

She began her career in her native Cuba, earning recognition as a vocalist of the popular musical group Sonora Matancera, a musical association that lasted fifteen years (1950-1965). In the 1960s, after the triumph of the Cuban Revolution, Cruz left her native country, becoming one of the symbols and spokespersons of the Cuban community in exile. Cruz continued her career, first in Mexico, and then in the United States, the country that she took as her definitive residence. In the 1970s she was fully incorporated into the Salsa genre, especially after her musical association with other artists of the genre within the Fania All-Stars. During the last years of her career, Cruz had already become a myth of Latin American music. Her constant evolution in the world of music, helped her to remain in force practically until her death and to conquer new generations of followers. Her career formed an invaluable legacy and inescapable reference for future generations who discover in her a powerful and prolific source of inspiration. Some of the songs performed by her are part of the cultural heritage of Latin America. Among the most famous are Quimbara, Burundanga, La Vida Es Un Carnaval and La negra tiene tumbao, among many others. Her musical legacy is made up of a total of 37 studio albums, in addition to many other special recordings, records in live or associations with other singers. In her career she was awarded numerous prizes, recognitions and distinctions, including two Grammy Awards and three Latin Grammy Awards. In addition to her prolific career in music, Cruz also made some punctual interventions as an actress in movies and telenovelas.
Celia Cruz also made famous the expression ¡Azúcar! (Sugar!) Which she adopted and it remained in the collective memory as her identifying phrase, which she shouted as a carnival ad inciting fun. With a unique style and an iconic image of unsurpassed attractiveness thanks to a charismatic and musical talent that is difficult to replicate, Celia Cruz is considered an authentic symbol of Latin culture worldwide. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Celia_Cruz

IBEYI

Photo: www.wmagazine.com

Ibeyi is a French (with Cuban, Venezuelan and Tunisian origins) musical duo consisting of twin sisters Lisa-Kaindé Diaz and Naomi Diaz. The duo sings in English, French, Spanish and Yoruba, a Nigerian language spoken in West Africa by their ancestors before being taken to Cuba as slaves in the 1700s. In Yoruba, Ibeyi (Ìbejì) means "twins". Their music has elements of Yoruba, French and Afro-Cuban, and fuses jazz with beats, samples with traditional instruments. Lisa, the lead singer, plays the piano; Naomi plays the traditional Peruvian/Cuban percussion instruments cajón and Batá drum. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ibeyi

March 21, 2019. [9:16] Blending traditional Yoruba chants with soul, electronic, hip-hop and beyond, the French-Cuban, twin-sister duo Ibeyi has created a sound all their own. The daughters of Latin jazz legend Miguel Angá Diaz and French-Venezuelan singer Maya Dagnino, sisters Naomi and Lisa-Kaindé were born into music. Now, as Ibeyi, their boundary-defying sound has caught the attention of music titans like Beyoncé, and is an homage to their mixed cultural heritage and the musical mélange that filled their childhood homes in Havana and Paris.  In this episode of SOUNDWAVE, Naomi and Lisa-Kaindé take us inside the creative process behind “Deathless,” a booming anthem that celebrates the innate power in every one of us. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rWMRNHra-Eg

  10. "Ibeyi: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert." NPR Music, Youtube. February 14, 2018. [17:08] Feb. 7, 2018 | Felix Contreras -- The twin sisters in Ibeyi started their turn behind the Tiny Desk by singing an invocation of a West African Yoruba deity.  They come by their connection to the Afro-Cuban culture by way of their late father, Miguel "Anga" Diaz, an in-demand Cuban percussionist who was part of a vanguard musicians who reinvigorated Cuban music before he died prematurely at age 45 in 2006. The sisters, Lisa-Kaindé and Naomi Díaz, carry that calling in their DNA, and how they've manifested it into their own art is nothing short of amazing.  As you see in this video, the twins (Ibeyi means 'twins" in Yoruban) perform their music with the batá drums associated with Yoruban sacred music and their elaborate vocal arrangements channel the call-and-response of traditional African music. The melding of their voices when they harmonize can be breathtaking, but the same can be said about the messages behind their songs, themes that inspire both inward introspection and celebrations of life.  The sisters truly have a magic that transcends cultures and languages. I watched them lead a sold-out crowd at Washington D.C.'s 9:30 Club through a Yoruban chant, and it was mind-blowing. Imagine that magical intensity in the small confines of NPR Music's offices and you get an idea of how transfixed we were.  And now you can experience that yourself. Enjoy.  SET LIST  "Oddudua" "Deathless" "Valé" "Transmission/Michaelion" MUSICIANS Lisa-Kaindé Diaz, Naomi Díaz. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GeApLkyH8jg
