"Trump COWERS In Bunker As America Rises." The Damage Report, Youtube. [9:04] Trump cowers in an underground bunker as America rises during national protests. John Iadarola and Francesca Fiorentini break it down on The Damage Report. "As protests in response to the killing of George Floyd by Minneapolis police officers continued outside the White House, President Donald Trump was reportedly taken into an underground bunker by the Secret Service for about an hour Friday evening. The New York Times first reported that the president was rushed to a bunker on Friday. CNN senior national correspondent Alex Marquardt confirmed that reporting in an appearance live from Washington, D.C. during a program hosted by Don Lemon. Marquardt discussed the protests that had occurred in D.C. and many other cities across America over the past few nights. Like several other cities, D.C. has imposed a curfew, effective at 11:00 pm local time. Marquardt noted that the protest had been peaceful during the day, but expected that it would start to get “violent” and “unruly” as the sun was setting. The National Guard has been deployed in D.C. to help keep order and was continuing to assist D.C. police and federal park service officers specifically in attempting to maintain distance between the protesters and the White House." 17. "A Former Baltimore Cop Explains Why the Department Targets Black Men." Slate, Youtube. [13:40] This past year has seen an enormous amount of attention paid to the toxic divide between police departments and the poor, black communities they serve. One thing we’ve learned is that tribal loyalty often prevents police officers from criticizing each other or their departments publicly—and at least sometimes, they lie when one of their own faces charges of misconduct. That’s why the recent emergence of Michael Wood Jr., a retired Baltimore cop, as a critic of law enforcement culture landed with impact: His voice was the relatively rare one that spoke with the knowledge of an insider but the unforgiving skepticism of an outsider.  In this video, you’ll meet Wood while he drives the streets of the city where he served as a police officer for 11 years, and hear him lay out his conception of what’s going wrong in the world of policing and how it could be made right. 20. "Keeanga-Yamahtta Taylor: We must defund the police." Democracy Now!, Youtube. [4:55] As continuous protests over the police killing of George Floyd are met with further police violence, calls are mounting to defund police departments across the country. In many major cities like Philadelphia, Chicago, Los Angeles and New York, police departments absorb nearly a third of the budget, and Professor Keeanga-Yamahtta Taylor says the reprioritization of resource distribution is urgent. "Public schools, public hospitals, public libraries, all of the things that make a city function — those have been systematically defunded, increasingly privatized," says Taylor. "Because of the COVID crisis, every city is talking about massive budget cuts — but not to the police. The police almost never have to incur layoffs. They almost never have to incur budget cuts, because they are seen as the public policy of last resort." June 1, 2020. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wAwRMNGPiqw

Organizers have called on the City Council to enact a People's Budget that slashes money for police and invests in services for the community instead. "We have created a system that overrelies on law enforcement and prioritizes their money, their budget, their needs over everything else," says Patrisse Cullors, co-founder of Black Lives Matter, and Reform L.A. Jails. "Now is the time that we redirect resources back into our communities." June 2, 2020. https://youtu.be/hoZmJBWuB9o
  27. "Peaceful Black Lives Matter Protesters Get Creative | NowThis." NowThis News, Youtube. [3:03] In US news and current events today, the Black Lives Matter protests have continued to boil over in over 140 cities across the US. Most stories you see are of riots, looting, and police brutality, but the George Floyd protests have been predominantly peaceful, and these Black Lives Matter protesters have come up with creative ways to have their voices heard in a peaceful manner.   From the Cupid Shuffle dance to taking a knee in powerful moments of silence, peaceful protesters are simply trying to make a difference in the world and fight for racial justice, equality, and against police brutality. The BLM protests have opened the eyes of the world to injustice, and as the unrest continues, we should focus on the vast majority of peaceful protestors instead of the few bad actors trying to turn a beautiful movement into a riot. We discuss the historic moment with legendary scholar and activist Angela Davis. “One never knows when conditions may give rise to a conjuncture such as the current one that rapidly shifts popular consciousness and suddenly allows us to move in the direction of radical change,” she says. “The intensity of these current demonstrations cannot be sustained over time, but we will have to be ready to shift gears and address these issues in different arenas.” June 12, 2020. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NL4yxg3vI_o

Legendary scholar Angela Davis says it’s important to recognize that Trump “represents a sector of a population in this country that wants to return to the past … with all of its white supremacy, with all of its misogyny.” Given the historic uprising against racism and state violence, “We cannot be held back by such forces as those represented by the current occupant of the White House,” she says. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Z6xu9uPsBU

John Iadarola and Brett Erlich break it down on The Damage Report. "From Washington, D.C., to Whitefish, Montana, white America is reckoning with racism, publicly demonstrating its belief that black lives have been too long neglected and abused. There’s just one question: Why now?  According to a Civiqs poll, 53% of Americans support Black Lives Matter, and only 25% oppose it — a 12-point increase in support since mid-April. By a double-digit margin, BLM is more popular than either Donald Trump or Joe Biden. As political scientist Drew Linzer noted: BLM “is the single most favorably viewed national political organization or politician in America right now.”  It’s difficult to pinpoint what exactly is driving the change. The autopsy revealed that Brooks was shot in the back as he was running away, and the death has been ruled a homicide by the county medical examiner. Brooks’s killing comes as protests against racism and police violence continue across the country. The Atlanta police chief has already resigned, and the officer who shot Brooks has been fired. “What we saw happen to Mr. Brooks is unfortunately something that we continue to see repeated in our communities all across this country,” says Mary Hooks, co-director of Southerners on New Ground, which is part of the National Bail Out collective and the Movement for Black Lives. “What we continue to see is police being called in as first responders to things that they should not be showing up for.” Jun 15, 2020. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B_P75C_rpZ0

Southerners On New Ground co-director Mary Hooks says reform alone is not sufficient. "Officers, no matter their intention, no matter their motive, they are tied and bound to a system that by training, its orders, its beliefs, is inherently rotten." Seattle police sparked outrage for responding to massive protests against police brutality by using pepper spray, tear gas and flashbangs on demonstrators and reporters. Activists then formed an autonomous zone in response to the police department’s abandonment of a precinct building. On Wednesday, President Trump threatened to send troops into Seattle to dismantle the community-run Capitol Hill Occupied Protest, which extends over several city blocks. [4:05] In US news and current events today, two Black men were found publicly hanged within 10 days of each other in California. Police described both as apparent suicides, while communities are calling them ‘lynchings’ and demand more answers (warning: distressing themes).  Robert Fuller was found hanged from a tree in public in California, a mere ten days after another Black man, Malcolm Harsch, was found in a similar state. In the wake of the Black Lives Matter movement and George Floyd protests against police violence, police brutality, and police racism, it's hard to view this as a coincidence, or believe the California authorities when they suggest these potential California lynching are both suicide. The potential lynching in California, the possible Robert Fuller lynching and Malcolm Harsch lynching are a terrifying reminder of the racism and hate crime prevalence of America today. 124. "Remember When the NRA Was Concerned About 'Tyranny?' | NowThis." NowThis News, Youtube. [4:05] In US news and current events today, The NRA has remained silent amid Trump’s call for a military response to peaceful Black Lives Matter protests, despite years of mongering fear of the ‘tyrannical’ U.S. government.  In response to the police killing of George Floyd, the subsequent George Floyd protests, and the desire of President Donald Trump to send in active duty military troops to squash the largely peaceful protests, the silence of the National Rifle Association is deafening. After decades of fearmongering about government tyranny and the 2nd Amendment right to defend oneself from a fascistic regime, the NRA has been curiously quiet in response to President Trump and his desire to do exactly that. The Second Amendment declares that, for the purposes of a well-maintained militia, the right to bear arms shall not be infringed. However, it's clear that in the eyes of the NRA hypocrisy, that really only applies to what you are bearing arms for, and what color your skin is. In their battle to preserve the 2nd Amendment, fight gun control and secure sweeping gun rights, its clear that the NRA is selective as to whose rights they actually care about. [18:20] Protests have erupted in Atlanta, where the police killing of unarmed African American man Rayshard Brooks in a Wendy’s parking lot has outraged residents. “What we continue to see is police being called in as first responders to things that they should not be showing up for.” June 15, 2020. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B_P75C_rpZ0

[4:55] This activist stood up to a school board member who publicly defended Robert E. Lee and claimed the Confederate general was a freer of slaves. In US news and current events today, the East Baton Rouge Parish school board held a hearing to rename ‘Lee High School,’ named for Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee. Days earlier, board member Connie Bernard defended Lee falsely claiming that he was responsible for freeing enslaved people. Bernard was caught shopping on her laptop during the hearing. Robert E. Lee owned 189 enslaved people and fought in court to indefinitely postpone their emancipation, which the courts denied. As a general for the Confederacy, Lee was a traitor who took up arms against the U.S. All of the school board members, including Connie Bernard, voted to approve renaming Lee High School. 142. "Jon Stewart on Defunding the Police and Dismantling Racist Institutions | NowThis." Youtube. [3:06] In US news and current events today, legendary comedian and former 'Daily Show' host Jon Stewart talked about defunding the police and dismantling racist institutions in this exclusive Jon Stewart interview. After the police killing of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Rayshard Brooks, and countless other Black people in America, the resulting George Floyd protests and Black Lives Matter protests against police brutality, police racism, and police violence have put systemic racism in the spotlight as BLM protesters take to the streets in support of police reform, racial justice and civil rights. Many have called to defund the police, others have gone so far as to call to abolish the police, while others are simply fighting for meaningful police reform. But after 400 years of systemic racism baked into racist institutions, it's clear that there's no simple answer to the problem of racist police. Prior to the release of his new movie, Irresistible, Jon Stewart spoke with NowThis about the current moment in history, and how politics, police and racism have been entwined for centuries. Jon Stewart, Irresistible director, has been a part of the American political discourse for decades, and to see him speak out like this is a sobering reminder of how far we still have yet to go. During this challenging time with the black lives matter movement and police unfairness and the coronavirus pandemic, I thought that I would present Roger's comments again. I always felt that every student (at any age) should hear Roger to better understand what was experienced by so many Americans in the 1940s, the 1950s, the 1960s, and, to some extent, today. In US news and current events today, the debate over Washington, DC statehood continues as Washington DC Mayor Muriel Bowser, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Cory Booker, Gerry Connoly, and other members of Congress are fighting to for Washington D.C. statehood. Despite its large population, larger than several states with full representation, we haven't seen a Washington D.C. state for the simple reason that it would add two Senators and Representatives to a largely Black and Brown populace, as AOC, Mayor Bowser, and many others have pointed out. Senate obstructionists like Mitch McConnell and Tom Cotton dance around the issue, but the real goal here is to deny a largely Black population the right to have a say in the way the country is run. No taxation without representation was one of the founding cries of the American experiment, yet it still seems to be going on to this very day. This week, Boston voted to end its use in the city, and Democratic lawmakers introduced a similar measure for federal law enforcement. "This is not an example of one bad algorithm. And where did they get them?  Subscribe to our channel! http://goo.gl/0bsAjO  Across the country, Americans protesting racial injustice and police brutality – the overwhelming majority of them peacefully – have been met by police forces that look more like an army. Officers have shown up to protests with riot gear, armored trucks, and military rifles. This is what America’s police now look like, and it’s the result of a decades-long buildup of military equipment among the country’s police departments. It began as a Reagan-era program to give police departments more resources to fight the War on Drugs, and has escalated ever since. Today, the idea of a militarized police force is baked into how American police see themselves.  Read more about the history of police militarization: https://www.cato.org/publications/white-paper/overkill-rise-paramilitary-police-raids-america. Mayor Bill de Blasio announced a budget deal that would move $1 billion in NYPD funding in an apparent nod to protesters’ demands, but organizers say they’re not satisfied. “All they’ve really done is shifted money from the NYPD budget over to school safety officers,” says Bianca Cunningham with the #OccupyCityHall encampment, who adds that school safety officers still contribute to a school-to-prison pipeline that disproportionately hurts Black and Brown communities. “It shows that they are completely tone deaf about what this moment is about,” she says. The FBI is investigating the encounter as a potential hate crime, and Bloomington’s mayor has condemned the incident in a statement. As the Cancel the Rent movement inspires rent strikes and protests nationwide, a coalition of labor unions, workers and racial and social justice groups in 25 states plans to stage a mass walkout this Monday called the “Strike for Black Lives.” We speak with Amna Akbar, law professor at Ohio State University, who wrote about how to respond to all of this in her op-ed in Sunday’s New York Times headlined “The Left Is Remaking the World.” July 15, 2020. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HSDJ4j4ygPA

[5:35] According to leaked documents, police offices and the federal government were fully aware of the fact that it wasn't Antifa that posed a threat to the country during the ongoing George Floyd protests - It was right wing extremists. This is from the government's own documents and police reports of both violence and seizures and uncovered terror plots that back up this information. Ring of Fire's Farron Cousins explains what's happening and why the media isn't talking about it. July 19, 2020. [9:25] As the United States mourns the loss of civil rights icon and 17-term Democratic Congressmember John Lewis, we feature his 2012 in-studio interview, when he tears up remembering the historic 1965 Selma to Montgomery march he helped lead in 1965 as a 25-year-old man, when he was almost beaten to death by police in what came to be called “Bloody Sunday” and helped push the country toward adopting the Voting Rights Act. “They came toward us, beating us with nightsticks and bullwhips, trampling us with horses,” he told Democracy Now! “All these many years later, I don’t recall how I made it back across that bridge to the church.” July 20, 2020. https://youtu.be/QeOnOH17kGc
  245. "Rep. John Lewis on the Freedom Rides, Surviving KKK Attacks, 1963 March on Washington & Malcolm X." Democracy Now!, Youtube. [26:08] Civil rights movement icon and 17-term Democratic Congressmember John Lewis, who died July 17 at the age of 80, helped found SNCC, the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, and was the youngest of the so-called Big Six who addressed the March on Washington in 1963. Before that, he was among the 13 original Freedom Riders who rode buses across the South to challenge segregation laws. He spoke to Democracy Now! in 2012 about his activism and that historic campaign, during which they were beaten and attacked by white mobs and the Klu Klux Klan, including by Klansman Elwin Wilson, who apologized to Lewis decades later. “It is so important for people to understand, to know that people suffered, struggled. Some people bled, and some died, for the right to participate,” Lewis told Democracy Now! July 20, 2020. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FtmHR6KbMYA

  1. "A Timeline of Events That Led to the 2020 'Fed Up'-rising." Michael Harriot, Theroot.com. Without the proper context, it is impossible to understand the mushroom cloud of uprisings that are exploding across the country in the wake of the deaths of George Floyd, Breanna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery and countless others. To contextualize the anger, frustration and desperation that forced protesters to recreate the lawlessness and chaos that black people experience on a daily basis, The Root has created a timeline of some of the events that led up to black people across the country collectively saying: “Aight, den.” May 30, 2020. https://www.theroot.com/a-timeline-of-events-that-led-to-the-2020-fed-up-rising-1843780800

It began with growing awareness about the deaths of Breonna Taylor and Ahmaud Arbery and ended with a video of a police officer kneeling on the neck of George Floyd, killing him. The blaze of protests that spread across the country this weekend in response to the police killing of George Floyd and countless others throughout American history is being responded to by policing so brutal even Alanis Morissette could clock the irony. 6. "The Sturmabteilung." Wikipedia.org, accessed June 2, 2020. Ltierally Storm Detachment, was the Nazi Party's original paramilitary wing. It played a significant role in Adolf Hitler's rise to power in the 1920s and 1930s. Its primary purposes were providing protection for Nazi rallies and assemblies, disrupting the meetings of opposing parties, fighting against the paramilitary units of the opposing parties, especially the Red Front Fighters League (Rotfrontkämpferbund) of the Communist Party of Germany (KPD), and intimidating Romani, trade unionists, and, especially, Jews – for instance, during the 1933 Nazi boycott of Jewish businesses. The SA were colloquially called "Brownshirts" (Braunhemden), from the color of their uniform shirts, similar to Benito Mussolini's blackshirts. Brown-colored shirts were chosen as the SA uniform because a large number of them were cheaply available after World War I, having originally been ordered during the war for colonial troops posted to Germany's former African colonies. The SA developed pseudo-military titles for its members, with ranks that were later adopted by several other Nazi Party groups, chief amongst them the Schutzstaffel (SS). The SS originated as a branch of the SA before being separated. After Adolf Hitler ordered the "blood purge" of 1934, he withdrew support from the SA. This event became known as the Night of the Long Knives (die Nacht der langen Messer). The SA continued to exist, but was effectively superseded by the SS, although the paramilitary forces were not formally dissolved until after Nazi Germany's final capitulation to the Allies in 1945. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sturmabteilung

We saw so much of the Twin Cities that most of our fellow white peers never got to see. There are protests where protests have never been, meaning where White people might be the only ethnicity in the crowd. I applaud the diversity of this moment. There is no question that the critical mass of many of them is owed to White people opting into action this time around. We have always needed White people to step into the fray with us to move the needle of change. But I have to ask, White people: what took you so long? That is not a rhetorical question. However, when thinking of Aunt Jemima, people often associate a person to the name not the pancakes. Before Aunt Jemima came to be an American icon, an initial interest needed to be established. This is the story of the woman who became a food, that became a product, which became one of the most recognizable figures in history: Aunt Jemima. Aunt Jemima was first introduced as a character in a minstrel show — an American form of entertainment developed in the late 19th century. Each show consisted of comic skits, variety acts, dancing, and music. The shows were performed by white people in blackface for the purpose of playing the roles of black people. Washington Post global opinions editor Karen Attiah, who is Black—and, if you skimmed past that part, actually named “Karen”—wrote an essay on the ridiculousness of white women being upset by it, and the historical context of them using performative victimhood to endanger (and, sometimes, murder) Black people.
