THE INTERVIEW

Arts & Ecology | Arm-of-the-Sea Theater draws its name from the Hudson River Estuary, a prodigious tidal ecosystem where fresh and salt waters meet and mix. We began in 1982 on the impulse of developing an imaginative way to communicate Hudson River issues to broad public audiences. It also just so happens that one of the world’s major urban centers is at the “mouth” of this river.
From the beginning our methods were pictorial—-combining sculpture and painting to create masks, puppet figures and other kinds of props, then adding movement and music to animate these visual images. Our first dramas were presented at free-to-the-public riverfront festivals, often in conjunction with the sloop Clearwater. They were large, bold and colorful; designed to hold the attention of the culturally diverse populations of the region and communicate fundamental concepts to people that perhaps were not likely to attend more formal environmental programs. . . . https://www.armofthesea.org/about-us/arts-ecology/
Arm-of-the-Sea’s mission is to create theater that inspires wonder, gives joy, provokes thought, and summons a heightened sense of place. We believe in handmade live theater as antidote to ubiquitous electronic media and consumer culture. We believe that such theater can play a vital part in community life. We believe that it can it must go out of its way to engage people from many classes and walks of life. For that reason, we often operate outside the normal bounds and buildings of institutional Theater.
Arm-of-the-Sea was founded in 1982 by Marlena Marallo and Patrick Wadden as an experimental hybrid performance group combining art, ecology and social action. We continue to experiment with this ephemeral art form as a symbolic visual language that can illuminate the links between human communities and the life-support processes of this blue ocean planet. Our company tours to cultural centers, festivals, community venues, and schools throughout the Northeast and beyond. We also conduct residencies, and create an annual outdoor spectacle, the ESOPUS CREEK PUPPET SUITE, in our hometown of Saugerties, NY. This web site is but a shadow on the cave wall. Come and see a live performance. https://www.armofthesea.org/about-us/mission-history/
Arm-of-the-Sea Theater is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit arts organization based in New York’s scenic Hudson Valley. Our touring company travels to cultural centers, festivals and community venues throughout the Northeast and beyond.
