FDA (Food and Drug Administration)
WARNING!
METHANOL IN MANY HAND-SANITIZER BRANDS
[7-2-2020] FDA is warning consumers and health care providers that the agency has seen a sharp increase in hand sanitizer products that are labeled to contain ethanol (also known as ethyl alcohol) but that have tested positive for methanol contamination. Methanol, or wood alcohol, is a substance that can be toxic when absorbed through the skin or ingested and can be life-threatening when ingested. The agency is aware of adults and children ingesting hand sanitizer products contaminated with methanol that has led to recent adverse events including blindness, hospitalizations and death.Methanol is not an acceptable ingredient for hand sanitizers and must not be used due to its toxic effects. FDA’s investigation of methanol in certain hand sanitizers is ongoing. The agency will provide additional information as it becomes available.Consumers who have been exposed to hand sanitizer containing methanol and are experiencing symptoms should seek immediate treatment for potential reversal of toxic effects of methanol poisoning. Substantial methanol exposure can result in nausea, vomiting, headache, blurred vision, permanent blindness, seizures, coma, permanent damage to the nervous system or death. Although all persons using these products on their hands are at risk for methanol poisoning, young children who accidently ingest these products and adolescents and adults who drink these products as an alcohol (ethanol) substitute, are most at risk.FDA reminds consumers to wash their hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after coughing, sneezing, or blowing one’s nose. If soap and water are not readily available, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend consumers use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60 percent ethanol (also referred to as ethyl alcohol).FDA remains vigilant and will continue to take action when quality issues arise with hand sanitizers. The agency is especially concerned with:
The dangers of drinking any hand sanitizer under any conditions. While hand sanitizers with possible methanol contamination are more life-threatening than those that are not contaminated, FDA urges consumers not to drink any of these products. Certain hand sanitizers that may not contain a sufficient amount of ethyl alcohol or isopropyl alcohol. Hand sanitizers that are sold or offered for sale with false and misleading, unproven claims that they can prevent the spread of viruses such as COVID-19, including claims that they can provide prolonged protection (e.g., for up to 24-hours). Products that are fraudulently marketed as “FDA-approved” since there are no hand sanitizers approved by FDA. Products packaged to appear as drinks, candy or liquor bottles, as well as products marketed as drinks or cocktails because their appearance could result in accidental ingestion or encourage ingestion. Children are particularly at risk with these products since ingesting only a small amount of hand sanitizer may be lethal in a young child. Products labeled with harmful or poisonous ingredients, such as methanol.
FDA is aware of reports of adverse events associated with hand sanitizer products. FDA encourages health care professionals, consumers and patients to report adverse events or quality problems experienced with the use of hand sanitizers to FDA’s MedWatch Adverse Event Reporting program (please provide the agency with as much information as possible to identify the product):Complete and submit the report online; orDownload and complete the form, then submit it via fax at 1-800-FDA-0178.

THE INTERVIEW
CREATIVE DIRECTOR, (ART)REPENEUER, ACTIVIST | Co-Founder UMEWE and INT-O Yellow | Umewe.org/ | Intoyellow.com/

RILEY JOHNDONNELL
G. Riley Johndonnell (a.k.a. Uncle Riley) is a conceptual artist and social activist who explores Optimism as a spiritual practice and as an art ‘Ism’ (just as Cubism, Modernism, Minimalism are ‘isms’). He believes that Optimism is a movement of creatives with the shared intention of positively impacting Reality. His personal and public works instigate transformation and challenge our perception of what is good/bad, dark/light, positive/negative.Johndonnell collaborated with Pantone Color Institute to create a signature color called International Optimism Yellow (‘INT-O Yellow’) as a platform for creatives to inspire more Optimism in the world. Over 1000 creatives, organizations and companies as well as two cities (Kingston, NY and Madison, NJ) have collaborated on INT-O Yellow. Johndonnell also co-founded UMEWE.org (‘you-me-we’) a social benefit company which creates tools and initiatives to ‘Turn Optimism Into Action’; each featuring ‘INT-O Yellow’ in some way.INT-O Yellow has evolved to become a color for mental health awareness (just as Pink is to breast cancer, Red is to HIV, Blue is to autism); it’s a way to collaboratively shine a light on the stigma surrounding mental health issues.Johndonnell creates civic works (under the alias “Uncle Riley”) in collaboration with the general public. Such works include daytime graffiti installations, interactive performances and videos, social media campaigns, the (P)optimism Shoppe, and more.Johndonnell is also the co-founder of Surface magazine (an influential international design publication). He shifted from a career in luxury branding, fashion, design and lifestyle publishing to focus on social cause and fine art. After two decades between San Francisco and NYC, and one year on the road in a vintage RV, he relocated to the Hudson Valley where he works with communities, creatives, government and organizations to create positive social change through art and design.
WHITNY SOBALA, Co-Founder of UMeWe
Whitny is a heart-driven marketer, business leader and Optimist, and has spent 18 years building brands and creating culture.
Whitny started her career at PepsiCo, where she spent 12 years honing her marketing expertise through various Marketing roles including, brand management for multi-million dollar, joint venture and emerging lifestyle brands, health and wellness innovation, media strategy, and sports marketing. Motivated by her strong entrepreneurial and innovative spirit, Whitny made the move to NYC-based invention start-up, Quirky.com, as Director of Marketing and Brand Strategy, where she helped lay the foundation for growth and build marketing launch plans.
Passionate about unlocking the potential of people and brands to drive positive social change, Whitny then founded Added Perk, a brand consulting firm that partners with social impact ventures and business leaders to unlock true potential and deliver brand “purpose” through culturally relevant brand strategy, community building, collaboration and business innovation.
While on this path, Whitny met fellow Optimist, artist and (art)reprenuer, Riley Johndonnell. Inspired by his vision of working in Optimism to create a new paradigm among life-style brands with a focus on generating positive social change, Whitny joined forces with Riley to develop and lead UMEWE.
Whitny holds a BA degree from the University of Pennsylvania, where she graduated Magna cum laude with a double major in Spanish and Communication and a Marketing concentration from the Wharton School of Business.

UMEWE (YOU-ME-WE) IS AN OPTIMISTIC STORY OF AN ARTIST/ENTREPRENEUR/ACTIVIST AND A HEART-DRIVEN MARKETER/COLLABORATOR/BRAND STRATEGIST WHO CAME TOGETHER TO CREATE A BRIGHTER REALITY.
After years of collective brand-building, innovation and creative design for luxury and consumer product goods life-style brands, Riley Johndonnell and Whitny Sobala found their paths converge on a common mission to leverage their ‘gifts’ for good.
In their subsequent work together, as activists and consultants in the corporate, civic and government “happiness and wellness” space, they met many other Optimistic innovators and discovered a real need to create tangible tools to help turn Optimism into Action; giving themselves and others practical ways to make a brighter reality.
They started by asking themselves: What if Optimism was a color? What if Optimism was a space?
INT-O YELLOW
INT-O Yellow is a color with a cause.
International Optimism Yellow (INT-O Yellow) is a color that was developed as a platform for participation and collaboration between: Pantone, artist Uncle Riley, UMEWE and YOU. It was conceived as a tool to explore Optimism and positively impact reality.
Backstory
INTOYellow is a tool for people to be able to turn optimism into action.
To be able to convert something negative into something positive, or to explore optimism as an “ism”. It’s a color that I created to conceptualise that it’s meant to be the embodiment of optimism. It is something that I viewed that when I put it into the world, it starts to generate more great things.
Optimism as a movement, as well as a color for mental health awareness.
There is still a lot of stigma around mental health discussions. So as I started gifting this color to artists to work with, one of the threads coming up was that artists suffer more from mental health issues than other folks. In particular, there were issues of suicide, and the color started to resonate with artists for different reasons… it has unlocked an awareness; it has become something else.
What is Optimism?
It is defined as: hopefulness and confidence about the future or the successful outcome of something. When most people say optimism, you’ll hear it juxtaposed against pessimism, or you’ll hear optimistic is not realistic. A lot of neurological studies of what optimism is in the brain have shown that biologically we are meant to be optimistic.
So there is this inherent biological optimism, and then there is how we see and interact with the world. In my view, optimism isn’t the opposite of reality; it’s a perception, a filter. How you perceive things.
I believe that we can craft a brighter reality.
I have seen how you can make a positive impact. On a scientific level, the positive vibrations affect the molecular construction of things, so I believe in the idea of positive energy but I don’t believe that negative energy is necessarily bad. It is the yin and the yang, both are necessary part of the harmony and equilibrium of life.
There is a harmonious balance created by combining gray and yellow.
I do a lot of public work, and a lot of it is a actually a balance of grey and yellow. The gray actually makes the yellow and other colors vibrate. I call it void gray, or cloudy day and sunshine. Essentially it is about the intention and perception of creating something that has a positive impact. A positive vibration that can be regenerated.
Today I totally see the beauty that comes out of darkness, out of gray, out of melancholy. But I also know that this is just one aspect of our existence, and I want to feel all the feelings across the spectrum of my humanity.

A MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS CAMPAIGN AND MOBILE EXHIBIT FEATURING A SPECTRUM OF EVERYDAY PEOPLE.
Artists: Photographer Kristopher Johnson & Artist G. Riley Johndonnell (Uncle Riley)
Collaborators: The public
The bold yellow, white, and black mural exhibit of oversized portraits pops-up in unexpected locations such the YMCA, City Hall and parks.
“These are not portraits of mental health patients, these are photos of YOU, ME and WE who live a spectrum of human emotions together. Everyone alive is somehow a resilient survivor of challenges (obstacles)— when we stop the stigma associated with mental health issues, we will start saving millions of people from silent suffering” – Uncle Riley
The Yellow Portraits project is a collaboration with New York based photographer Kristopher Johnson, artist Uncle Riley and the Kingston, NY community at large. People pose for INTOyellow portraits and share them in public spaces and on social media in honor of National Mental Health Awareness Month (May).
This project fights the stigma around mental health not by focusing on documenting mental health patients, but by focusing on the faces of our community at large, who are drawn to participate and share human emotions. Yellow Portraits continues to expand as more people pose and post their portraits on social media and through installations created by Uncle Riley, Kristopher Johnson and various partnering entities such as the City of Kingston, WMC Health Alliance, the YMCA, ARC, MAD (Midtown Arts District), and Kingston Arts Commission.

A REGENERATIVE CYCLE OF GIFTING INTOYELLOW TO ARTISTS TO FUEL THE OPTIMISM MOVEMENT.
Artist: G. Riley Johndonnell (Uncle Riley)
Collaborators: Artists and Creatives
For years, Uncle Riley has gifted INTOyellow to artists to explore Optimism in their public and personal work. The intention is for the artists to promote the Optimism movement, generate more positive energy in the world and raise awareness around mental health issues. Statistics prove artists suffer higher rates of depression and suicide, and so making art that engages with these topics can often be deeply personal and cathartic.
Many of the artists who explore the color discover a sense of connection with other artists through shared intention, and find the color adds an additional layer of meaning to their work. This cycle of gifting INTOyellow and sharing creations made from the color is important because it offers ways to build community and can be a source of healing, connection and transformation.
Uncle Riley gifts INTOyellow paint to fellow artists who create Optimistic works, and then share their creations with others to inspire more Optimism. If the artwork is sold; Uncle Riley encourages 50% for the artist, 25% towards local mental health charities and 25% for UMEWE* or to the gallery or store where the piece was sold (to demonstrate gratitude for supporting and promoting the artists and the movement).
*UMEWE (you-me-we) is an organization founded by Uncle Riley that creates “tools to turn Optimism into Action”—in addition to other programs, UMEWE funds gifting INTOyellow paint to artists, creatives and communities.

ROCKING CHAIRS DONATED BY THE COMMUNITY, PAINTED INTOYELLOW, AND PLACED IN PUBLIC SPACES TO INSPIRE POSITIVE DIALOGUE.
Artist: G. Riley Johndonnell (Uncle Riley)
Collaborators: local community members, political leaders, and nonprofits like the Good Work Institute and Midtown Rising
Pairs of rocking chairs are placed for the community to rock, talk and share bright ideas about improving their neighborhoods and cities. These are safe, neutral places for constructive conversation. Participants and spectators are welcome to make a “Ah-OOGA Honking” sound (or an actual Ooga Horn that Uncle Riley frequently carries with him) if fellow participants stray into partisan political speech.
Rocking Optimism happens when members of the public donate old chairs and Uncle Riley, along with volunteers paint them INTOyellow and place them in pairs around town in places such as public libraries, parks, town halls, neighborhood porches, and cafes. In Kingston, participants can publicly share selfie photos or videos of their conversation via hashtags on a local media platform. Only constructive ideas to problems and positive dialogue about pressing issue are allowed.
Participants are encouraged to engage with strangers, or people they might assume have contrary viewpoints like more conservative or liberal, or people of different lived experiences such as differing races or ages, differing economic backgrounds or differing roles in the community like politicians and others.

SAY THEIR NAMES, SAY THEIR NAMES
YMCA Farm Project in Kingston has offered to host a "Say Their Names" Memorial, honoring black lives we have lost to police brutality and racial injustice.

SAY THEIR NAMES, SAY THEIR NAMES.
"The most unfathomable schools and sages have never attained to the gravity which dwells in the eyes of a baby of three months old. It is the gravity of astonishment at the universe, and astonishment at the universe is not mysticism, but a transcendent common sense. The fascination of children lies in this: that with each of them all things are remade, and the universe is put again upon its trial. As we walk the streets and see below us those delightful bulbous heads, three times too big for the body, which mark these human mushrooms, we ought always to remember that within every one of these heads there is a new universe, as new as it was on the seventh day of creation. In each of those orbs there is a new system of stars, new grass, new cities, a new sea."—G. K. Chesterton

[1:17:27] SNCC Veterans Charlie Cobb, Maria Varela, and Judy Richardson discussed their experiences working with the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, as well documenting the Movement. The event also served as an introduction of the SNCC Digital Gateway, a forthcoming “documentary website” containing written, visual and oral historical materials. The SNCC Digital Gateway is a collaborative project of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee Legacy Project (SLP) and Duke University that tells the story of SNCC from the perspective of the activists, themselves. It is funded by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and builds off of the pilot website of the SLP-Duke collaboration, One Person, One Vote: The Legacy of SNCC and the Fight for Voting Rights (http://onevotesncc.org). The forthcoming website, SNCC Digital Gateway: Learn From the Past, Organize for the Future, Make Democracy Work (https://snccdigital.org) tells the story of how young SNCC activists united with local communities in the Deep South during the 1960s to take control of their political and economic lives. In it, SNCC veterans, historians of the Movement, archivists, and students weave together grassroots stories, digitized primary source materials held at repositories across the country, and new multi-media productions to bring this history to life for a new generation. - "Civil Rights Activist, Kwame Touré (Stokely Carmichael), Part 1 of 3." CaribNation TV, Youtube. [28:42] THE THOUGHTS AND PHILOSOPHY OF KWAME TOURE. . . Famed civil rights leader Stokely Carmichael was born in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago. Carmichael's parents immigrated to New York when he was a toddler, leaving him in the care of his grandmother until the age of 11, when he followed his parents to the United States. His mother, Mabel, was a stewardess for a steamship line, and his father, Adolphus, worked as a carpenter by day and a taxi driver by night. In 1954, at the age of 13, Stokely Carmichael became a naturalized American citizen and his family moved to a predominantly Italian and Jewish neighborhood in the Bronx called Morris Park. Soon Carmichael became the only black member of a street gang called the Morris Park Dukes. In 1956, he passed the admissions test to get into the prestigious Bronx High School of Science, where he was introduced to an entirely different social set—the children of New York City's rich white liberal elite. Though he had been aware of the American Civil Rights Movement for years, it was not until one night toward the end of high school, when he saw footage of a sit-in on television, that Carmichael felt compelled to join the struggle. He joined the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE), picketed a Woolworth's store in New York and traveled to sit-ins in Virginia and South Carolina. A stellar student, Carmichael received scholarship offers to a variety of prestigious predominantly white universities after graduating high school in 1960. He chose instead to attend the historically black Howard University in Washington, D.C. There he majored in philosophy, studying the works of Camus, Sartre and Santayana and considering ways to apply their theoretical frameworks to the issues facing the civil rights movement. At the same time, Carmichael continued to increase his participation in the movement itself. While still a freshman in 1961, he went on his first Freedom Ride—an integrated bus tour through the South to challenge the segregation of interstate travel. During that trip, he was arrested in Jackson, Mississippi for entering the "whites only" bus stop waiting room and jailed for 49 days. Undeterred, Carmichael remained actively involved in the civil rights movement throughout his college years, participating in another Freedom Ride in Maryland, a demonstration in Georgia and a hospital workers' strike in New York. He graduated from Howard University with honors in 1964. February 24, 2015. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n8o9SLuGqKw
