For nine days – October 24th – November 1st you can vote at one of 5 polling sites around Ulster County.  Hours of operation vary but include a mix of day, evening, and weekend hours.

 

You can vote in an early voting center in the county where you live. You can visit ANY of the Early Voting locations around the county (Woodstock, Kingston, New Paltz, Lloyd, or Ellenville) that is convenient, but if you wait to vote in person on Election day November 3rd you must visit your designated polling site.

WARNING!

METHANOL IN MANY HAND-SANITIZER BRANDS


[7-2-2020] FDA is warning consumers and health care providers that the agency has seen a sharp increase in hand sanitizer products that are labeled to contain ethanol (also known as ethyl alcohol) but that have tested positive for methanol contamination. Methanol, or wood alcohol, is a substance that can be toxic when absorbed through the skin or ingested and can be life-threatening when ingested... .

Consumers who have been exposed to hand sanitizer containing methanol and are experiencing symptoms should seek immediate treatment for potential reversal of toxic effects of methanol poisoning. Substantial methanol exposure can result in nausea, vomiting, headache, blurred vision, permanent blindness, seizures, coma, permanent damage to the nervous system or death. Although all persons using these products on their hands are at risk for methanol poisoning, young children who accidently [sic] ingest these products and adolescents and adults who drink these products as an alcohol (ethanol) substitute, are most at risk.

YMCA Farm Project in Kingston has offered to host a "Say Their Names" Memorial, honoring black lives we have lost to police brutality and racial injustice.

Our music is influenced by classical and fantasy literature as well as cinematic, traditional, religious, and classical music. Tolkien's poem, "The Song of Beren and Lúthien!"  We hope you enjoy it:)  A note on our interpretation:   This piece brought us to a new place artistically, as we have never before told a love story.  In our opinion, J.R.R. Tolkien’s story of Beren and Luthien is one of the truest and purest tales of love ever told.  It was our honor to carefully craft this work to give our interpretation of the story and the beautiful poetry as recited by Aragorn in the Fellowship of the Ring.    This piece combines the melodies written by one of us long ago with new melodies and a new setting by another of us.  Thus, a theme of old and new was born, as there are multiple melodies from the past combined with those never before heard in this piece.    Word painting is a favorite compositional method of ours, so many of the melodic and expressive decisions made are based on that approach.  For example, when the words “music welling underground” are heard, the bass instruments come to life on the word “underground”.  There are many similar examples throughout the song.  See if you can hear them!  Finally, it is worth noting our decision to draw attention to the presence of Luthien in this song.  This song may admittedly be more from the approach of Beren than from Luthien’s, for whenever Luthien is present, the song sounds more alive, complete, hopeful.  When she is absent, the soundscape is colder, barer and starker.    We hope you enjoy this piece!  Thanks so much for your support of our music!    We are unable to get permission to sell this song so we are posting it here free for your enjoyment.  If you want a copy of the mp3, we are offering it to those who support us on Patreon!  Unfortunately there was a technical difficulty with our original upload, so we are re-posting our song in a simplified format.  My brothers composed and arranged the piece.  My family sang it.   Please no bad language in the comments.  We want this to be family friendly:) October 24, 2018. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=11_aneHVaz8

Sensory Awareness Month 2020


It's officially sensory awareness month!

Every October we celebrate Sensory Awareness month. Our campaigns aim to increase mainstream understanding of the importance of sensory integration and processing. Always seeking to help people better understand the impact on function and participation.

This month is no different but the campaign is. 

We are so excited about what we have for you this year. We have partnered with artist and illustrator Jacinta Read to bring you five very special stories.  The characters in these stories are very dear to our hearts. They are all based on real life and all highlight the incredible importance of sensory integration and processing for health and well-being.

Each Thursday morning through October 2020 we will introduce you to a new character. Over the course of the week we will tell their story and discuss the issues that it highlights.

Sensory health transforms lives and we can’t wait to tell everyone. We hope you will join us! Engage with the stories, ask questions, comment and of course share with your networks - together we can raise awareness!

Later in the month there will be other fun events. We will get to meet the artist and discover how participating in this event was for her. We will be launching a new super cool resource for professionals. And on October 31st we will be celebrating the end of Sensory Awareness Month with a social distanced, sensory friendly Halloween Trunk-Or-Treat.

About SPD | Sensory processing (originally called "sensory integration dysfunction" or SID) refers to the way the nervous system receives messages from the senses and turns them into appropriate motor and behavioral responses. Whether you are biting into a sandwich, riding a bicycle, or reading a book, your successful completion of the activity requires accurate processing of sensation.

Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD), exists when sensory signals are either not detected or don't get organized into appropriate responses....






What Sensory Processing Disorder Looks Like | Sensory Processing Disorder can affect people in only one sense–for example, just touch or just sight or just movement–or in multiple senses. One person with SPD may over-respond to touch sensation and find clothing, physical contact, other tactile sensory input to be unbearable and/or they may respond to visual or auditory or another sensory input.  Another person might under-respond and show little or no reaction to stimulation, even pain or extreme hot and cold or just may be slow to respond to sensation. In children whose sensory processing of messages from the muscles and joints is impaired, posture and motor skills can be affected. These children have postural disorder and are the "floppy” children who prop themselves up on walls when standing, lean over on their hand when writing and love to hang out, but not to move.  The old fashioned “couch potato” now turned “mouse potato” as society becomes 2-dimensional (auditory and visual) with I-Pads, I-watches and I-everything!  In yet another subtype (dyspraxia) children are awkward and clumsy and get called "klutz" and "spaz" on the playground, always the last to be picked for a team in PE. Still other children exhibit an appetite for sensation that is in perpetual overdrive, we call these children sensory cravers. They seem almost addicted to intense stimulation but when they get they become dysregulated.  These kids often are misdiagnosed - and inappropriately medicated - for ADHD.

Sensory Processing Disorder is most commonly diagnosed in children, but people who reach adulthood without treatment also may experience significant symptoms and continue to be affected by their inability to accurately and appropriately interpret sensory messages.

These "sensational adults" may have difficulty performing routines and activities involved in work, close relationships, and recreation. Because adults with SPD have struggled for most of their lives, they may also experience depression, underachievement, social isolation, and/or other secondary effects.

Sadly, misdiagnosis is the rule rather than the exception because many health care professionals are not trained to recognize sensory issues. The STAR Institute for Sensory Processing Disorder is dedicated to researching these issues, educating the public and professionals about their symptoms and treatment, advocating for those who live with Sensory Processing Disorder and sensory challenges associated with other conditions, and providing treatment.  We also have a vision of a world where SPD is an accepted diagnosis, is included in diagnostic manuals such as the DSM and  ICD and where treatment  is covered by insurance. We will work tirelessly towards this goal.

Vision | A world in which all people with Sensory Processing Disorder receive support and services that result in having a meaningful and fulfilled life.

Mission | To improve the quality of life for children, adolescents and adults with SPD, and their families by providing:

  • Comprehensive assessment and effective intervention for Sensory Processing Disorder
  • Rigorous research with our collaborating university-based research partners
  • Education for caregivers, pediatric professionals, and educators; and
  • Advocacy for official recognition of SPD worldwide.

History


STAR Institute for Sensory Processing Disorder was formed in 2016 from two merged organizations SPD Foundation and STAR Center. STAR Institute for SPD provides premier treatment, education, and research for children, adolescents, and adults with SPD. The SPD Foundation grew out of work begun in 1977 with funding from the U.S. Public Health Service division of Maternal and Child Health (MCH). With this grant from MCH, SPDF's founder, Dr. Lucy Jane Miller, developed and nationally standardized the Miller Assessment for Preschoolers (MAP) to assess preschool children with developmental disorders including Sensory Processing Disorder..... https://www.spdstar.org/basic/vision-mission-history
