ABOUT | Who We Are

Stephen Blauweiss - Producer/Director is an independent filmmaker. His 25 years of experience encompass all aspects, from concept through final production, and he has produced over 75 short films, 3 features, and several music videos. He produces work on a wide variety of subjects, from art and education to social and environmental issues. A number of Blauweiss' films have been screened in museums, exhibitions, and festivals across the US, Europe, and Canada, and he has received NYSCA and NEA grants. His expertise includes producing, directing, editing, art directing, cinematography, lighting, and graphics.

A native of New York City, he has over twenty years of experience with clients including The New York Times, PBS, and CBS TV. Blauweiss is also a graphic designer and has taught for over 25 years, including a decade at Pratt Institute and FIT (Fashion Institute of Technology). Blauweiss is co-director and co-producer of Lost Rondout: A Story of Urban Removal, a feature documentary chronicling how in the 1960s, federally funded urban renewal projects destroyed hundreds of working-class communities across America, including Kingston's Rondout neighborhood. The film has been screened across the Hudson Valley, Albany and New York City, and received numerous awards.

Karen Berelowitz - Producer/Studio Manager is an artist and entrepreneur with a nonprofit management background. She has her own art business, Karmabee, featuring her black & white drawings, and ran her store in Kingston from 2011 to 2016. Karen was previously a manager at the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck and co-director of the DC-based Riecken Foundation building libraries in Central America. Skilled in project management, writing, editing, social media, and small business, Karen appeared in Lost Rondout, and was a featured artist in one of Blauweiss Films' artist profiles that aired on PBS.

(VERY) NOTABLES

FILM

Blauweiss Media works on a variety of subjects with a particular focus on history, art, and architecture. The thumbnails at left will lead you to segments of some of our main projects, including:

  • Two ongoing projects about the Hudson Valley communities of Kingston and Woodstock, each of which encompasses a broad spectrum of subjects to tell the story.
  • A sample segment from the 2016 documentary Lost Rondout: A Story of Urban Removal, which focuses on the devastation wrought by urban renewal in Kingston. The film documents the social ramifications of displacing thousands of residents with poorly planned local and federal policies, leading to the problems still seen across country today.

ART

ArtistFilmDocs are short profiles about artists and their work. With an art background himself, filmmaker Stephen Blauweiss knows how to create intimate, engaging films that capture the passion and style of each artist in a concise five-minute segment. Each production is a result of close consultation with the artist, resulting in a unique film that fits their personality and style.

Many of these have appeared regularly on a weekly TV show about the national arts scene, AHA! A House of Arts, on PBS station WMHT in Albany. In 2018, Blauweiss Media received a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts through the Albany Museum of History & Art (the oldest museum in the country!) to create short film profiles about four artists in their collection.

We also produced over 60 of these short films for ArtScene, in the Hudson Valley regional monthly magazine Chronogram video series.... https://blauweissmedia.com/ArtistFilmDocs.html

BOOKS

Blauweiss Media published its first book in 2018 abut the old post office in Midtown, and is currently working on a new book about Historic Kingston, due for publication Fall 2021. PHOTOTALKS @ Hudsonvalleyhistoryandart.com

We Specialize in Presenting History, Arts & Culture in Three Highly Visual Formats: PhotoTalks, Books, and Films.

Black Cultural History of Ulster County

A MULTIMEDIA PRESENTATION

https://www.hudsonvalleyhistoryandart.com/blackculture

Learn about the lesser-known and certainly under-acknowledged cultural history of our region in this free multimedia presentation conveyed in a historical context through a wide range of rare photographs and video clips about the arts, music, photography, visual arts, dance, education, and even boxing, plus an overview of local industries such as brick-making, and how the Black community played an integral part in building major infrastructure projects such as the D&H Canal and the Ashokan Reservoir. We will also highlight the many connections to community activism.

The presentation includes profiles of key figures, including:
  • Harlem’s Father Divine, a charismatic religious leader who practiced liberal interracial practices far ahead of this time and owned various properties in Ulster County;
  • Augusta Savage, The Harlem Renaissance, Harlem Artists Guild, and artists Robert Blackburn and Ben Wigfall
  • Peg Leg Bates, a renowned performer and owner of the first Black resort in the Catskills;
  • Musician Juma Sultan, who played with Jimi Hendrix at the Woodstock concert and lived for two years at the Group 212 Intermedia Arts Colony;
  • Boxer Billy Costello, a native Kingstonian who won the WBC light welterweight championship in 1984 and whose fights were frequently broadcast on television.
  • Local photographer Mickey Mathis
  • Musicians Odetta, Jimi Hendrix, Charles Mingus, Jack DeJohnette, Richie Havens, Sonny Rollins, and local Juma Sultan, through today with Simi Stone.
