FREE POP-UP CLASSES | Classes for kids and adults. As part of our initial response to this year’s unprecedented crisis we offered free pop-up online coding classes to the general public. During the months of March and April 2020, K-12 students who were unable to attend school and adults who were unable to work during this challenging time were still able to enrich themselves and build new skills.
The pop-ups were streamed live on Facebook and are now available on-demand here. While these classes do not serve as a replacement for hands-on instruction, it’s a first step toward rebuilding and re-skilling our community so that we are all stronger on the other side. https://cancode.org/popup/
KINGSTON CANCODE
KINGSTON CANCODE | AlbanyCanCode is excited to announce its expansion into the Hudson Valley with the launch of KingstonCanCode.
Since 2016 AlbanyCanCode has been providing workforce training in software development for adults and k-12 classes for children in the Capital Region. The Hudson Valley shares many characteristics with the Capital Region, including tech businesses struggling to hire and residents who have aptitude but have yet to explore a career in technology.
Kingston Python for Data Analytics Course | In this 12-week Python for Data Analytics course, offered in partnership with SUNY Ulster, students will learn fundamental programming concepts using the programming language Python, specifically as a tool for collecting, analyzing, and visualizing data. Python is one of the world’s most popular programming languages, and more businesses are introducing Python into their work. The course will take students through the basics of programming (variables, data structures, loops, conditionals, etc.), and into Python Libraries for data analysis (Numpy, Matplotlib, etc).
Offered 100% virtually, this course will met Tuesdays & Thursdays from 5:45pm-8:45pm beginning February 2nd, 2021. The cost of the course is $1,750 and tuition assistance is available to those who qualify. To ensure that all of our students have the means to complete our course, lender laptops are available.
A link to our application can be found below. If you’d like to learn more about the course, please feel free to reach out below for more information.
IMMIGRANTSCANCODE
We are excited to partner with The New York State Office for New Americans (ONA) on a new initiative, Immigrants Can Code, a Digital Literacy pilot, that will help newcomers to New York State gain digital literacy skills. The class will run 6-8pm on Mondays and Wednesdays for 10 weeks
Building off of our existing Virtual Digital Literacy program, offered remotely, this 10-week program will help bridge the skills gap for all people who now need to be proficient in digital tools for work and life. This course will allow students to become skilled in computer usage and common software programs, and some may continue to take one of our more advanced courses designed to help students begin a career as a software developer. This partnership will help ensure that New York’s immigrant community will have access to digital literacy education and training essential to building careers in the Empire State’s fast-growing innovation economy. Anyone interested in taking advantage of this program, please submit the form below and mention “Office for New Americans” in your message.
VIRTUAL DIGITAL LITERACY
The unprecedented crisis facing the American workforce has two defining characteristics: a critical need for digital literacy as businesses struggle to continue operation virtually, and an overwhelming wave of newly unemployed people.
AlbanyCanCode’s Virtual Digital Literacy program was designed to create a bridge for underserved populations to take their first steps towards careers in technology. Now more than ever this program has the opportunity to change the lives of those who can participate.
Students in AlbanyCanCode’s Virtual Digital Literacy course will have a wide range of experiences and competencies, ranging from those who have used a computer frequently in a professional environment, to those who have rarely used a computer and feel very nervous about doing so. This class is intended to meet students wherever they are and help them meet their own personal goals, whether that is entry into our workforce computer programming courses or other employment opportunities.
The key to Digital Literacy is differentiated learning, ensuring that each student is getting the skills they need and that they are able to move at their own pace. The course will cover basic computer usage skills, a survey of software usage including word processing and spreadsheet use, use and management of email, and using the web to conduct productive internet searches to find reliable information and learning tools.
AlbanyCanCode is uniquely suited to provide this type of Digital Literacy training within this current environment of distance learning because our approach is hands-on and provides each student with 1:1 resources to solve problems as they arise at each student’s own pace.
Curriculum While students in an AlbanyCanCode Virtual Digital Literacy course will move at their own pace and work towards individual goals, the following are the skills that we anticipate all students will master by the time they complete the course:
- Basic computer use, including
- Understanding Peripherals (ie. Using a keyboard, mouse, etc).
- Browsing files on the computer and understanding file pathing
- Identifying and using various web browsers
- Creating and saving documents
- Selecting, copying and pasting
- Typing skills
- Survey and usage of office productivity software tools, including
Microsoft Office, Google Suite of tools or similar sets of software they
may encounter in professional settings.
- Using and managing email, calendars
Survey of virtual meetings tools such as Microsoft Teams, Zoom, GoToMeeting, and Google Hangouts Meet - Browsing the web, and how to conduct productive internet searches to find reliable information and learning tools.
- Understanding best practices for internet safety and security
- Understanding mobile device applications and mobile versions of software utilized in class
Students who have mastered these skills will be able to move on to the basics of computer programming in HTML and CSS.

- "The Power and Strength of Bearing Witness." Kristi Pikiewicz, PH.D., PSychologytoday.com. Bearing witness is a term that, used in psychology, refers to sharing our experiences with others, most notably in the communication to others of traumatic experiences. Bearing witness is a valuable way to process an experience, to obtain empathy and support, to lighten our emotional load via sharing it with the witness, and to obtain catharsis. Most people bear witness daily, and not only in reaction to traumatic events. We bear witness to one another through our writing, through art, and by verbally simply sharing with others. In times of doubt, disbelief, and insecurity, the practice of bearing witness can be an important aspect of our awareness and presence.Bearing witness can be defined as acknowledging that something exists or is true. From a Buddhist perspective, and specifically the Zen Peacemakers Order, to bear witness is to embrace both the joy and the suffering we encounter. Rather than simply observing the situation, we become the situation. We become intimate with whatever it is—hunger, poverty, discrimination, disease, or death. K. De Luca, Medium.com. Imagine if you learned that photographs of your

those photographs. Such is the plight of Tamara Lanier, who has taken
on the Ivy League behemoth to secure the rights to the photos, which
languished in a drawer out of sight and away from the public eye for
years. The daguerreotypes depict women and men, breasts and genitalia
exposed, their haunting stares a riveting testament to the degradation
our ancestors endured during slavery’s shameful reign. February 3, 2021.

Berry Hawes, Postandcourier.com. What on earth were these? Nothing in
the drawer explained what they’d discovered. Only small, handwritten
labels affixed to each offered clues: “Fassena (carpenter), Mandingo,
plantation of Col. Wade Hampton, near Columbia, S.C.” “Jack (driver),
Guinea, plantation of B.F. Taylor, Esq., Columbia, S.C.” “Jem, Gullah,
belonging to F.W. Green, Esq.” One of the researchers rushed downstairs
to summon their colleagues. The discovery sent Reichlin and others on a
quest to solve the disturbing mystery. It continues today, 45 years
later. But Harvard historians weren’t the only ones hunting for clues.

of the daguerreotypes. Based on her own research, she claimed to be a
descendant of two people captured in them. February 1, 2021.
