"With the rise in rents, many renters are no longer able to afford their lease. Those that are being directly evicted find themselves sleeping in their cars, moving in with friends or relatives, or staying in homeless shelters – for cat owners, this is obviously nearly impossible to bring a cat (or many) with them; for dog owners, it can be extremely difficult to find space and many shelters don’t allow pets. For people who are attempting to move into new, more affordable housing, they come up against rules against pets or discrimination against certain breeds, such as pit bulls. In these cases, people are being forced to choose between furry family members and moving into an affordable place to live. In many cases, the only recourse for these individuals and families is to surrender their animal into the care of an animal shelter, like the Ulster County SPCA. This has placed our shelter at full capacity.

"Here are our current numbers:

We have kennel space for 25 dogs, but we have a total of 61 dogs in our care (shelter + foster), which puts us at 244% capacity on dogs.
We have kennel space for 70 cats, but we have 100 cats in our care, putting us at 140% capacity for cats.
We have kennel space for 8 small animals, with 15 in our care, putting us at 188% capacity.

"We have fosters to take in some of the animals, but we need more adopters to come forward. As the weather gets colder, the need for us to take in more animals will only get higher, and we are not able at this time to meet that need. Additional support, including monetary and food donations for the animals would also be greatly appreciated, but it would not off-set the matter of physically not having enough space in the shelter for all these animals."

ABOUT ULSTER COUNTY SPCA

The UCSPCA is a private, nonprofit organization whose mission is to prevent cruelty to animals by providing temporary shelter and finding adoptive homes for homeless, abused and neglected animals; conducting cruelty investigations; eliminating the crisis of homeless animals by providing low-cost spay/neuter services for cats and by spaying or neutering all animals offered for adoption; providing humane education and by working to improve laws to end animal cruelty.

The Ulster County SPCA does not receive funding from the ASPCA, nor any federal, state, or county agencies. We rely completely on our passionate advocates, donors, volunteers, adopters, local businesses, and friends to make our work possible. We appreciate your support in helping our organization and the many animals we care for each year.

In a shelter environment, it seems as if there are never enough hours in a day to make sure all of our individual animals get the love, care and exercise that is necessary. This is why we need you! These magnificent and innocent creatures long for their forever homes, so why not make the wait a little less lonesome and repetitive? By becoming a member, volunteer or even a foster parent, you can help these helpless animals in so many beneficial ways. This paper describes the thematic analysis of qualitative data (n = 44) which underpinned item generation, revision of the item pool based on researcher, practitioner, and community member feedback, exploratory (n = 310) and confirmatory factor analyses (n = 320) to ascertain the factor structure of the data, and examination of convergent and divergent validity. Results supported the use of a three-factor scale (Happiness about Partner/Metamour Relationship, Excitement for New Connections, and Sexual Arousal), which demonstrated excellent internal consistency as well as strong divergent and convergent validity. The Sangha is gathered together at Magnolia Grove Monastery in Batesville, Mississippi during the 2011 US Teaching Tour with the theme Cultivating the Mind of Love. This 115-minute dharma talk is from October 2, 2011. This is the last day of Magnolia retreat and may be a little difficult if listeners have not heard the talks from the previous days (see "2011 US Tour" playlist). The beginners mind. It is a source of energy. A willingness to practice. And to serve others. We are not afraid of obstacles in order to realize our dream and our intention. Siddhartha had this beginners mind, and we can too. The mind of love is the beginners kind. During this retreat has allowed this to arise in our heart. Do we know how to continue this mind? In Buddhism, there are two kinds of truth: conventional and ultimate. Thay explains how it is similar to what we see in science. We can learn to understand the true nature of reality. When we come to the ultimate truth, we can leave behind our notions of birth and death, suffering and happiness, being and non-being, etc. How can we do this? We cannot be an observer, we must try to be a participant. The Buddha’s insight received under the bodhi tree was to be relieved of all fear. This cannot be learned from notions and concepts. We learn of Right View, another element of the noble path. Thay tells a story of Katyayana, a student of the Buddha, asking about Right View. A teaching of no-birth, being and non-being, as illustrated by a cloud. Right View is being able to transcend all these notions: being and non-being, birth and death, left and right, above and below, subject and object, etc. All pairs of opposites. We cannot remove one without the other. Story of a grain of salt wanting to know how salty is the ocean to illustrate the subject of cognition and object of cognition. Being a participant to truly understand. Talking to a flame to illustrate this teaching of being and non-being. Thay writes these pairs of opposites on the board: birth and death, being and nonbeing, coming and going, sameness and otherness. All these must be transcended to see the true face of reality. A teaching on interbeing and four more notions - self, man, living beings, and life span. Thay explains each as outiined in the Diamond Sutra. This Sutra teaches us that humans are only made of non-human elements. This is one of the oldest teachings in deep ecology. The Buddha too is comprised of non-Buddha elements. This is why bowing to the Buddha is not worshiping, but is a meditation. We have been talking of Right View and dualism. We turn now to three other elements of the noble eightfold path that arise from Right View. Right Thinking can help us remove all discrimination. It is thinking that can produce understanding and compassion. It can heal the world. From these two we can then practice Right Speech. To restore and reconcile. This element includes our ability for deep listening. And then we turn to Right Action. Anything we can do with our body to protect and save. These three are all forms of action, starting with our thoughts. Thinking is already action. And we produce each of these every day. The philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre said that man is the sum of his action. In Sanskrit, this is called karma. Everything we produce will continue us; it does not disappear. We are the author, and that is our continuation. If we can keep our beginners mind alive, surely we will have a beautiful future. The other elements of the path, briefly outlined in this talk, are Right Livelihood, Right Diligence, Right Mindfulness, and Right Concentration. This path can be seen very concretely in the Five Mindfulness Trainings. We also briefly learn of the Three Doors of Liberation — emptiness, signlessness, and aimlessness — in light of the retreat’s teaching. "Hastur Origins - A Hideous Lovecraftian Unspeakable Monstrosity That No Sane Human Should Know!" [12:20] H.P. Lovecraft, the father of horror is widely known for having the most wonderful yet terrifying imagination. He dreamt up and imagined many unfathomable terrors that have now become staples of horror. Most notably, the Cthulu mythos has been a body of work with a large cult following that enjoys immense popularity, even today. On our channel, we try to explain many things Lovecraftian and today we bring to you, Hastur, the King in Yellow. Hastur the Unspeakable is a Cthulhu deity from the Cthulhu mythos. Despite its association with H. P. Lovecraft, the creature is only mentioned in one of his stories, "The Whisperer in Darkness." It was created by Ambrose Bierce at first. Ambrose Bierce was the first to use the word Hastur in a poem. Hastur, the god of shepherds, was Beirce's creation. RW Chambers stole, or rather borrowed, the word from Bierce, along with a few others like "Carcosa," and used it in The Yellow Sign, one of the best bizarre stories ever written. Hastur is a planet in the Chambers narrative, and Carcosa is a city or fortress on the "cloud beaches" of Lake Hali, along with this, giant octopoid formations can be found in Lake Hali. However, the conception of Hastur changes from city to deity as we will explain in this video. The King in Yellow, king of Carcosa and wearer of the Palid Mask, is also mentioned in the same story. Lovecraft referenced Hastur in passing in his story The Whisperer in the Darkness, around 20 years after the publication of The Yellow Sign, alongside a diety named Shub-Niggurath. He is an octopoid creature who is Cthulhu's loathed sibling. He's usually depicted as looking more like an octopus than his humanoid brother. NINETY PERCENT. Yet, if you are a black woman/woman of color looking for other black women/WOC to relate to in the research, media, or heck, in your community images you see are usually male and usually white. I am standing up in hopes to connect with other women of color, black, brown, red, yellow who need to see there are others like them. There are only a few of us talking about it. [30:54] This is a video about Thomas Nagel's famous 1974 Philosophical Review paper, "What is the like to be a bat?" The paper introduces a novel argument against physicalism. The basic idea is that consciousness embodies (or can only be understood) from a subjective point of view. But physical science, by definition, gets away from subjective perspectives and goes toward objective understanding. So when one tries to give a scientific account of conscious experience, one ends up getting farther away from the very phenomenon that one set out to understand. It is also mentioned that dualism may be no better off at explaining consciousness. In it, Descartes argues that the physical world outside of his own mind does exist, though it may be that he is wrong about some of the specific details of physical reality. He does this by arguing that God would be a deceiver if there were no physical world in general, but a few mistakes here or there do not demonstrate that God is a deceiver. He then offers two arguments for Dualism, the theory of mind according to which the mind and the body are two distinct things. The conceivability argument comes first, but it is more complicated, so I don't discuss it here because this is part of an introduction to philosophy. [15:56] This is a lecture video about a selection from Gilbert Ryle objecting to what he calls "the Official Doctrine," which is the dualist theory of mind espoused by Rene Descartes and many other philosophers following him. Ryle claims that dualists are making a 'category mistake'. He explains the idea of a category mistake with a famous example of a visitor to Oxford University. The reading also includes several other examples of category mistakes. When applied to the mind, Ryle is claiming that the dualist's mistake is to think that the mind is in the same logical category as physical objects. [18:26] This is a lecture video about a short article by Amy Kind, wherein she explains David Chalmers' famous Zombie argument against physicalism. A "zombie" is a philosophical term for a creature that is micro-physically identical to a normal human being, but who doesn't have any consciousness. The argument, briefly and roughly, is that such a creature seems conceivable, which means that such a creature is metaphysically possible. As a literary theory, it focuses on exposing cultural biases in all texts, whether a passage in a popular book or the flashing script of a television ad. Readers engaged in deconstruction analyze words and sentences to identify inherent biases and call into question commonplace interpretations of the text. While this may sound presumptuous or cynical on the front end, deconstruction isn’t about destroying meaning. Rather, it’s about undermining ingrained assumptions to view things in a new light.Oppose Prevailing WisdomThe first thing you’ll have to do is question the common meaning or prevailing theories of the text you're deconstructing. When deconstructing, you need to start from a place of critical opposition. Like a scientist on the fringe of discovery, look for evidence to support alternative views.Expose Cultural BiasPractitioners of the deconstructive method refer to cultural biases in texts in a number of lofty ways, calling them "binaries" and "hierarchical oppositions." To understand these interchangeable terms, remember that certain words and the concepts they represent are often privileged, or emphasized more, than their oppposite words and concepts -- rich over poor, male over female, enlightened over ignorant. For instance, if a poet personifies everything in nature -- the sun, the moon, the sea -- as being male, you might conclude that the text has a male bias. If a novelist portrays white European culture as “learned” and “sophisticated” in contrast to other cultures of the world, you might suspect a Western, Euro-centric bias in the text. It’s your job to root out these biases.Analyze Sentence StructureOne way to investigate underlying meaning of a text is to analyze sentence structure, specifically the arrangement of subject and object. Ask yourself if a person or thing represented as an object in the text makes it subordinate to the subject in some way. For instance, if a novel's male protagonist is always the initiator of action rather than the recipient -- “He took her to the store; he bought her earrings; he found some food she would like” -- the recurrent sentence structure may reinforce the protagonist’s power over the dependent character. Look for these patterns and determine if the points of view of other characters are limited to favor cultural bias.Play With Possible October 3, 2023: MeaningsAfter you’ve analyzed the text for biases, see if your discoveries support a new interpretation. While many associate deconstruction with destruction of meaning, the opposite is true. According to the Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy, by assessing the biases of a given text -- the social and historical conventions that helped produce it -- you’ve opened up the words and sentences to an infinite amount of possible, if partial, readings. Returning to Shakespeare’s Sonnet No. 18, the last couplet reads: “So long as men can breathe or eyes can see / So long lives this, and this gives life to thee.” While many have interpreted these lines to convey the eternal power of poetry, the deconstructive reader might find more irony: In his overbearing wish to immortalize his beloved, the poet has betrayed not only the futility of love poetry but the entire chivalric tradition that values youth and beauty over maturity and wisdom.
