Art for Self Discovery Thursday, October 3⋅5:15 – 6:45pm | Weekly on Thursday Description:This program is founded on the belief that self-expression through artistic creation has therapeutic value for those who are seeking deeper understanding of themselves and their emotions. In this art therapy form we use our inborn desire to create. Providing space for our feelings to show up in our artworks. These sessions will mostly use fine art based techniques, such as drawing and painting, but we will also explore other forms of artistic expressions, like writing, singing and dancing. The instructor will gently guide the group with various exercises and questions, giving enough time for the individuals to explore and experience their own creative process as well as share with others in the group. The benefits of this practice include reducing stress and anxiety, self-discovery, releasing emotions, as well as building strength and confidence.    Group will lead by Rita Bolla, MFA Artist and practitioner of Expressive Art Therapy. https://samadhiny.org/calendar

Parents in Recovery Friday, October 4⋅5:00 – 6:00pm | Weekly on Friday Description:A support group for parents fighting addiction of any kind. Any stage of recovery is welcome. Adults in recovery face many day-to-day challenges, and for those who are parents, maintaining good relationships with children can be both rewarding and daunting at the same time. Addressing parenting issues during various stages of recovery can lead to enhanced quality of the parent-child relationship, especially during adolescence. Research has shown that effective parenting is one of the most critical influences on healthy adolescent development—and for parents in recovery, parenting might be an even more critical factor given children's heightened risk for problems with substance use. All parents find it difficult to balance warm and supportive parenting with having to hold a child responsible for his/her behavior. But parents must realize that age appropriate rule-setting and positive discipline are necessary and will most likely lead to better child outcomes in the long-term.  Please notify Samadhi within 24 hours of group if childcare is needed. https://samadhiny.org/calendar

The Samadhi Recovery Community Outreach Center is a non-profit organization grounded in the belief that Mindfulness based principles and practices create a strong foundation for a path to freedom from addiction. These are evidenced based practices with extensive body of research behind them. This is an approach to recovery that understands: All individuals have the power and potential to free themselves from the suffering that is caused by addiction. We feel confident in the power of mindfulness and compassion to relieve suffering of all kinds, including the suffering of addiction. This is a process that cultivates a path of awakening, the path of recovering from the addictions and delusions that have created so much suffering in our lives and in this world.

Radio Kingston [joined] the student-lead world-wide climate strike by going dark on Friday, September 20th between 10 am and 5 pm. Led by youth activists like Greta Thunberg, adults are being asking to take action too and walk out of places of business, schools, government offices  and join a local gathering of like-minded concerned citizens of the world. 350.org founder Bill McKibben said "Solving the climate crisis will involve disrupting business as usual. Adults like you and me should consider joining this walkout as a statement that they’re committed to disruptive, transformative change."
Locally, climate strikers [gathered] at Academy Green beginning at 11am to ask for strong action to immediately address the existential threat that is climate change.

September 11, 2019. [45:14] In her first extended broadcast interview in the United States, we spend the hour with Greta Thunberg, the 16-year-old Swedish climate activist who has inspired millions across the globe. Last year she launched a school strike for the climate, skipping school every Friday to stand in front of the Swedish parliament, demanding action to prevent catastrophic climate change. Her protest spread, quickly going global. Hundreds of thousands of schoolchildren around the globe have participated in their own local school strikes for the climate. Since her strike began in 2018, Greta has become a leading figure in the climate justice movement. She has joined protests across Europe. She has addressed world leaders at the U.N. climate talks in Poland and the European Union Parliament. She has even met the pope. And now she is in New York to join a global climate strike on September 20 and address the U.N. Climate Action Summit on September 23. Greta has refused to fly for years because of emissions, so she arrived here after a two-week transatlantic voyage aboard a zero-emissions racing yacht. She is also planning to attend the U.N. climate summit in Santiago, Chile, in December. U.S. YOUTH CLIMATE STRIKE

Youthclimatestrikeus.org

OUR MISSION | We, the youth of America, are striking because the science says we have just a few years to transform our energy system, reduce our greenhouse gas emissions, and prevent the worst effects of climate change. We are striking because our world leaders have yet to acknowledge, prioritize, or properly address our climate crisis. We are striking because marginalized communities across our nation —especially communities of color, disabled communities, and low- income communities— are already disproportionately impacted by climate change. We are striking because if the social order is disrupted by our refusal to attend school, then the system is forced to face the climate crisis and enact change. With our futures at stake, we call for radical legislative action to combat climate change and its countless detrimental effects on the American people. We are striking for the Green New Deal, for a fair and just transition to a 100% renewable economy, and for ending the creation of additional fossil fuel infrastructure. Additionally, we believe the climate crisis should be declared a national emergency because we are running out of time.

https://www.youthclimatestrikeus.org/platform

OUR DEMANDS

Green New Deal

  • An equitable transition for marginalized communities that will be most impacted by climate change
  • The implementation of any measures to curb climate change must be considerate, and actively working against, the impacts of climate change on marginalized communities-- communities of color, impoverished communities, disabled communities, and LGBTQ+ communities-- who are at the frontline of all climate-related disasters
  • Encourage dense affordable livable cities prioritizing community stability and countering displacement. Ensure access to safe and adequate housing for all;
  • Respect and follow all treaties with First Nation communities and protect the food sovereignty and intellectual property of First Nations, as well as ensuring appropriate, culturally competent training programs for tribal colleges and collaborations between tribal and state colleges to provide education for the green economy.
  • Invest in education and training for inmates regarding renewable careers, and invest grassroots transformative justice to move away from the unjust prison system and the school-to-prison-pipeline, and outlaw private prisons and the forced labor of prison inmates
  • Support green job training programs in the transition from prison to work.
  • Address the effects of the climate crisis on various communities within the United States with an emphasis on front-line, marginalized communities by allowing them to create committees that can apply for governmental aid in climate-related disasters while also helping to prepare said communities to mitigate climate-related damage;
  • Ensure a just transition for all front-line communities by ensuring that the transition is led from the community level and by prioritizing solutions that eliminate community-level threats via equitably distributed investments to historically disadvantaged communities;
  • Protect and enforce land and sovereign rights of tribal nations; honor and protect treaty rights, and free prior and informed consent for Indigenous nations, in keeping with the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples;
  • Remove entrenched racial, regional, ability, and gender-based barriers to income and wealth; create a public bank to finance a transition for the benefit of all Americans
  • Invest in affordable and accessible renewable energy, such as solar gardens etc.
  • Respect Indigenous women, Indigenous queer and trans women, women of color, and queer and trans people of color and protect them from assault, sexual violence, and trafficking
  • Acknowledge the term “climate refugee” and welcome all climate refugees including; war refugees, communal/gang violence refugees, and natural disaster refugees.
  • Work together with other wealthy nations to be prepared to welcome climate refugees and provide safety and accommodation for them in international solidarity.
  • An equitable transition for fossil-fuel reliant communities to a renewable economy
  • Respect the contributions of fossil fuel workers
  • Invest in local renewable energy, community based industries, and local living wage jobs for transitioning fossil fuel workers
  • Invest in local communities so they may clean up the lands and waters polluted and damaged by fossil fuel extraction/infrastructure/shipping/export
  • Switch to clean renewable energy and clean industrial processes
  • Reskilling of their employees for new clean, local energy industries
  • Provide fully paid quality healthcare for their workers and families who have been made unhealthy by working for extractive and toxic industries.
  • Diversify local economies with a particular focus on communities where unsustainable industries hold control over the labor market; ensure workers can partake in the energy transition through workplace democracy, control and ownership;
  • 100% renewable energy by 2030
  • Upgrading the current electric grid
  • Investing in green technology and developments
  • No creation of additional fossil fuel infrastructure (pipelines, coal plants, fracking etc.)
  • The creation of a committee to oversee the implementation of a Green New Deal
  • That has subpoena power
  • Committee members can’t take fossil fuel industry donations
  • Accepts climate science

A halt in any and all fossil fuel infrastructure projects

  1. Fossil fuel infrastructure disproportionately impacts indigenous communities and communities of color in a negative way
  2. Creating new fossil fuel infrastructure would create new reliance on fossil fuels at a time of urgency
  3. Therefore we ask to end the construction of any additional fossil fuel infrastructure immediately

All decisions made by the government be tied in scientific research, including the 2018 IPCC report

  1. Reducing GHG emissions by 50% by 2030, and 100% by 2050
  2. These facts need to be incorporated into all policymaking decisions

For declaring a National Emergency on Climate Change

  1. This calls for a national emergency because we have 11 years to avoid catastrophic climate change
  2. Since the US has empirically been a global leader, we should be a leader on climate action
  3. Since the US largely contributes to global GHG emissions, we should be leading the fight in GHG reduction

Compulsory comprehensive education on the impacts of climate change and the importance of climate justice throughout grades K-8

  1. K-8 is the ideal age range for compulsory climate change education because:
  2. Impressionability is high during that developmental stage, therefore it’s easier for children and young adults to learn about climate change in a more in-depth manner, and retain that information
  3. Climate change becomes a nonpartisan issue, as it truly is because it’s based solely on science and human experience from the beginning
  4. Promoting community stability through empowering local leadership and decision making through ensuring accessible high-quality, culturally competent and science-based curriculum on climate change as well as by giving local communities authority over the standards, programs, and investments established within them

Preserving our public lands and wildlife

  1. Diverse ecosystems and national parks will be very impacted by climate change, therefore it’s important that we work to the best of our abilities to preserve their existence
  2. The earth’s animals are intrinsic to its existence, and with the onset of a possible 6th Mass Extinction we must protect wildlife and their habitats at all costs

Keeping our water supply clean

  1. Clean water is essential for all living beings, when we pollute our water supply, or the water supply of someone else, it’s a violation of an essential human right

Ana Kasparian, Adrienne Lawrence, and Maz Jobrani, hosts of The Young Turks, break it down. MORE TYT: https://tyt.com/trial  Read more here: https://www.wsj.com/articles/students...  “Hundreds of thousands of students from across the globe took the lead during a day of climate protests before next week’s United Nations summit on climate change.  “We deserve a safe future and we demand a safe future,” said Greta Thunberg, a 16-year-old Swedish activist who recently raised awareness about reducing carbon footprints by sailing across the Atlantic in a racing yacht.  “Is that really too much to ask?” she told a packed crowd of schoolchildren, their parents and demonstrators in New York before addressing next week’s climate conference at the United Nations.  Organizers said 800 events were planned across the U.S., including Washington, D.C., Chicago and Los Angeles, capping off a day of rallies across the globe from Sydney to Kabul to Berlin to Istanbul. Many centered on specific goals, including stopping approvals for new mining or drilling projects and switching entirely to renewable sources of energy by 2030.  In the Solomon Islands, protests sprang up over rising sea levels. Hundreds of schoolchildren in Thailand burst into the headquarters of the environment ministry in Bangkok and then lay down to mimic their own extinction.  In Germany, police in cities such as Berlin, Frankfurt and Munich warned that central areas would be shut down as tens of thousands of people joined the rallies, including one in front of the office of Chancellor Angela Merkel.  In Australia, about 300,000 people took part in a series of rallies, including around 100,000 who crowded into a park in Sydney, double the size of a previous protest in March. Many of the attendees held placards with slogans such as “There is No Planet B.”  Hosts: Ana Kasparian, Adrienne Lawrence, Maz Jobrani  Cast: Ana Kasparian, Adrienne Lawrence, Maz Jobrani. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZPsJvi2H68k

Expendable (Period)," "¡PUERTO RICO SE LEVANTA!" and "WE ARE MISSING OUR LESSONS SO WE CAN YEACH YOU ONE," the enthusiastic crowd flooded the Big Apple in hopes of having their message heard.  The sea of young people, including Swedish activist Greta Thurnberg and two of the 21 young plaintiffs who filed a constitutional climate lawsuit against the U.S. government, among other climate activists, took over the streets, assembling at Foley Square to march to Battery Park for a rally.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=If8jObfclxQ

ELLA ANDALL

Andall was born in Grenada—one dare not ask the date—and moved to Trinidad when she was eight or nine. She found Trinidad extremely different from Grenada. For the first time, she encountered a discomfort with “blackness”, and distrust of anything “too African”. But she had been raised in a home and a family that had inherited the West African traditions of her ancestors, and she studiously resisted any attempts to remove her from those traditions, even refusing to sing in school choirs where she would be made to sing differently. Andall is an olorisha, or Orisha devotee. It is a way of life that celebrates the ancestors and the divine in nature, with various aspects and forces of the natural world represented in the Orisha, who are each a manifestation of God, or Olodumare. . . .

CELIA CRUZ

Úrsula Hilaria Celia de la Caridad Cruz Alfonso (October 21, 1925 – July 16, 2003), known simply and professionally as Celia Cruz, was a Cuban singer and the most popular Latin artist of the 20th century. Cruz was renowned internationally as the "Queen of Salsa",

"La Guarachera de Cuba", as well as "The Queen of Latin Music".
Throughout her career, Celia Cruz interpreted and internationally popularized tropical rhythms such as Son, Guaguancó, Rumba, Guaracha and Bolero. However, the genre that led to stardom was Salsa.

Celia Cruz and La Sonora Matancera.

Celia_Cruz_y_La_Sonora_Matancera.jpg#/media/File:Celia_Cruz_y_La_Sonora_Matancera.jpg

She began her career in her native Cuba, earning recognition as a vocalist of the popular musical group Sonora Matancera, a musical association that lasted fifteen years (1950-1965). In the 1960s, after the triumph of the Cuban Revolution, Cruz left her native country, becoming one of the symbols and spokespersons of the Cuban community in exile. Cruz continued her career, first in Mexico, and then in the United States, the country that she took as her definitive residence. In the 1970s she was fully incorporated into the Salsa genre, especially after her musical association with other artists of the genre within the Fania All-Stars. During the last years of her career, Cruz had already become a myth of Latin American music. Her constant evolution in the world of music, helped her to remain in force practically until her death and to conquer new generations of followers. Her career formed an invaluable legacy and inescapable reference for future generations who discover in her a powerful and prolific source of inspiration. Some of the songs performed by her are part of the cultural heritage of Latin America. Among the most famous are Quimbara, Burundanga, La Vida Es Un Carnaval and La negra tiene tumbao, among many others. Her musical legacy is made up of a total of 37 studio albums, in addition to many other special recordings, records in live or associations with other singers. In her career she was awarded numerous prizes, recognitions and distinctions, including two Grammy Awards and three Latin Grammy Awards. In addition to her prolific career in music, Cruz also made some punctual interventions as an actress in movies and telenovelas.
Celia Cruz also made famous the expression ¡Azúcar! (Sugar!) Which she adopted and it remained in the collective memory as her identifying phrase, which she shouted as a carnival ad inciting fun. With a unique style and an iconic image of unsurpassed attractiveness thanks to a charismatic and musical talent that is difficult to replicate, Celia Cruz is considered an authentic symbol of Latin culture worldwide. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Celia_Cruz

In Yoruba, Ibeyi (Ìbejì) means "twins". Their music has elements of Yoruba, French and Afro-Cuban, and fuses jazz with beats, samples with traditional instruments. Lisa, the lead singer, plays the piano; Naomi plays the traditional Peruvian/Cuban percussion instruments cajón and Batá drum. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ibeyi

[9:16] Blending traditional Yoruba chants with soul, electronic, hip-hop and beyond, the French-Cuban, twin-sister duo Ibeyi has created a sound all their own. The daughters of Latin jazz legend Miguel Angá Diaz and French-Venezuelan singer Maya Dagnino, sisters Naomi and Lisa-Kaindé were born into music. Now, as Ibeyi, their boundary-defying sound has caught the attention of music titans like Beyoncé, and is an homage to their mixed cultural heritage and the musical mélange that filled their childhood homes in Havana and Paris.  In this episode of SOUNDWAVE, Naomi and Lisa-Kaindé take us inside the creative process behind “Deathless,” a booming anthem that celebrates the innate power in every one of us. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rWMRNHra-Eg

  10. "Ibeyi: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert." NPR Music, Youtube. February 14, 2018. [17:08] Feb. 7, 2018 | Felix Contreras -- The twin sisters in Ibeyi started their turn behind the Tiny Desk by singing an invocation of a West African Yoruba deity.  They come by their connection to the Afro-Cuban culture by way of their late father, Miguel "Anga" Diaz, an in-demand Cuban percussionist who was part of a vanguard musicians who reinvigorated Cuban music before he died prematurely at age 45 in 2006. The sisters, Lisa-Kaindé and Naomi Díaz, carry that calling in their DNA, and how they've manifested it into their own art is nothing short of amazing.  As you see in this video, the twins (Ibeyi means 'twins" in Yoruban) perform their music with the batá drums associated with Yoruban sacred music and their elaborate vocal arrangements channel the call-and-response of traditional African music. The melding of their voices when they harmonize can be breathtaking, but the same can be said about the messages behind their songs, themes that inspire both inward introspection and celebrations of life.  The sisters truly have a magic that transcends cultures and languages. I watched them lead a sold-out crowd at Washington D.C.'s 9:30 Club through a Yoruban chant, and it was mind-blowing. Imagine that magical intensity in the small confines of NPR Music's offices and you get an idea of how transfixed we were.  And now you can experience that yourself. Enjoy.  SET LIST  "Oddudua" "Deathless" "Valé" "Transmission/Michaelion" MUSICIANS Lisa-Kaindé Diaz, Naomi Díaz. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GeApLkyH8jg

[2:38] Orin Oriki Osun Oshogbo - Priestess of Oshun sings to Yeye Osun in Oshogbo Grove  Yeye Olayiwola Oladunni Olosun singing for the Yoruba orisha Oshun / Osun / Ochun / Oxum in her sacred grove, by her river on Oshogbo, It was filmed by Awo Orunmila Adé Egun Crispin Robinson.  Oshun (known as Ochún or Oxúm in Latin America) also spelled Ọṣun, is an orisha, a spirit or deity that reflects one of the manifestations of God in the Ifá and Yoruba religions. She is one of the most popular and venerated orishas.  Oshun is a Nigerian Yoruba deity of the river and fresh water, luxury and pleasure, sexuality and fertility, and beauty and love. She is connected to destiny and divination.  She is the patron saint of the Osun River in Nigeria, which bears her name. Oshun is honored at the Osun-Osogbo Festival a two-week-long annual festival, usually in August, at the Osun-Osogbo Sacred Grove on the banks of the Osun River, Nigeria.  Oshun is syncretized with Our Lady of Charity, patron saint of Cuba, and Our Lady of Aparecida, the patron saint of Brazil. In Trinidad she is associated with St. Philomena and the Hindu deity Ganga Mai or Mother Ganges. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pn3iWb9eU4c

"The Ifa Divination System." UNESCO, Youtube. September 28, 2008. [3:06] Description: The Ifa divination system, which makes use of an extensive corpus of texts and mathematical formulas, is practiced among Yoruba communities and by the African diaspora in the Americas and the Caribbean. The word Ifa refers to the mystical figure Ifa or Orunmila, regarded by the Yoruba as the deity of wisdom and intellectual development.  In contrast to other forms of divination in the region that employ spirit mediumship, Ifa divination does not rely on a person having oracular powers but rather on a system of signs that are interpreted by a diviner, the Ifa priest or babalawo, literally the priests father. The Ifa divination system is applied whenever an important individual or collective decision has to be made.  The Ifa literary corpus, called odu, consists of 256 parts subdivided into verses called ese, whose exact number is unknown as they are constantly increasing (there are around 800 ese per odu). Each of the 256 odu has its specific divination signature, which is determined by the babalawo using sacred palm-nuts and a divination chain. The ese, considered the most important part of Ifa divination, are chanted by the priests in poetic language. The ese reflect Yoruba history, language, beliefs, cosmovision and contemporary social issues. The knowledge of Ifa has been preserved within Yoruba communities and transmitted among Ifa priests.  Under the influence of colonial rule and religious pressures, traditional beliefs and practices were discriminated against.The Ifa priests, most of whom are quite old, have only modest means to maintain the tradition, transmit their complex knowledge and train future practitioners. As a result, the youth and the Yoruba people are losing interest in practising and consulting Ifa divination, which goes hand-in-hand with growing intolerance towards traditional divination systems in general.  Country(ies): Nigeria. https://youtu.be/k9lGVF6jYN4

"Elegba Medley Orisha Music." Mercedez TheFmGirl, Youtube. January 22, 2019. [5:05] Elegba (also referred to as Eleggua or Elegguá) is the owner of the roads and doors in this world. He is the repository of ashé. The colors red and black or white and black are his and codify his contradictory nature. In particular, Elegba stands at the crossroads of the human and the divine, as he is a child-like messenger between the two worlds. In this role, it is not surprising that he has a very close relationship with the orisha of divination. he opens the door between the worlds and opens our roads in life. He recognizes himself and is recognized by the numbers 3 and 21. There are many aspects to Elegba as in all other divinities. This song is done by Ella Andall out of Trinidad and Tobago a cross of both the Yoruba mixed with the French forming a beautiful medley. His name changes in many other cultures and so, therefore, the pronunciation and spelling may vary but its the same aspect of the very said spirit which in another term is who he loves to portray himself as The Trickster.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ub7nDPEtNGU

"Osanyin/osain by ELLA ANDALL." Nathaniel Lewis, Youtube. December 5, 2017. [11:32] "Osain is an herbalist who lives in the bush, a powerful medicine man. Worshipers explain that he too is one spirit with many aspects. Indeed, up to seven different manifestations of Osain may be present at one time; I myself have seen as many as five. A few contacts identified four 'brothers' or aspects of Osain as Elesije, Ere Osa,Demolay and Kiripiti, but these are not known to many worshipers. Adherents syncretize Osain with "Saint Francis"....In some shrines, however, worshipers surround Osain's stool with Hindu paraphernalia and may even plant a Hindu-style flag to mark it. ... It appears that the tendency to perceive Shango and Osain as having different "brothers" or aspects is strictly Trinidadian, for they are not so represented in Yoruba lore. It may be that orisha worshipers have used the various traits of each orisha as the basis for postulating distinct spirits or aspects..." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vnBw1UeqL-Q

"Yemanja (remember my home , heal me ) goddess of the sea." Ministry of Miracles Healing School SB, Youtube. January 1, 2018. [2:13] Yemaya is the Yorùbá Orisha or Goddess of the living Ocean, considered the mother of all. She is the source of all the waters, including the rivers of western Africa, especially the River Ogun. Her name is a contraction of Yey Omo Eja, which means "Mother Whose Children are the Fish." As all life is thought to have begun in the sea, all life is held to have begun with Yemaya. She is motherly and strongly protective, and cares deeply for all Her children, comforting them and cleansing them of sorrow. She is said to be able to cure infertility in women, and cowrie shells represent Her wealth. She does not easily lose Her temper, but when angered She can be quite destructive and violent, as the sea in a storm. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FZOA8NJOY_0

She governs everything pertaining women; childbirth, conception, parenting, children safety, love, and healing. She oversees deep secrets, ancient wisdom, the moon, sea shells, and the collective unconscious. According to myth, when her waters broke, it caused a great flood creating rivers and streams and the first mortal humans were created from her womb. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YXQ69fZviLI  [The singer is Ella Andall]
