  1. "Blue-ringed octopus flashing its bright warning colors." Karel Mestdagh, Youtube. July 27, 2015. [3:26] A greater blue ringed octopus (Hapalochlaena lunulata) flashing its bright blue color ring shaped markings on its body. This tiny marine creature is one of the world's most venomous ( potentially deadly !! ) animals. If provoked or stepped on, it may bite despite its friendly nature. Blue-ringed octopus venom is produced by bacteria in the mouth of the octopod. Unfortunately there is no antivenom and after a bite the venom could paralyze and eventually kill an adult human within minutes to a few hours. Death is caused by heart failure due to paralysis of the respiratory muscles. . . . https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Bt1LvpZ1Oo
  2. "Deadly Blue-ringed Octopus." The Nature of Science, Youtube. July 12, 2015. [2:48]  Despite its size the Blue-ringed Octopus has a fearsome reputation and with good reason. It’s one of the deadliest animals on the face of the planet. Its weapon of choice? Spit. Yep good old spit or saliva. Ok so it might not sound like the weapon of an evil villain but it seems to work. But this is super spit and what makes it so lethal is that it has a deadly neurotoxin in it which is manufactured by bacteria living in its salivary glands. When injected into its prey this super spit paralyses it victims. If you want to learn more jump onto our blog. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CeNTJhhsF9s
  3. "Idiotic tourist poses with highly venomous octopus." Nypost.com, July 17, 2019. [0:30] A tourist in Bundaberg, Australia, was lucky not to be bitten by this dangerous octopus. Video shows the 24-year-old from Northern Ireland playing with the eye-catching mollusk while on a fishing trip. He later learned the species was the highly venomous blue-ring octopus, whose bite can cause paralysis. https://nypost.com/video/idiotic-tourist-poses-with-highly-venomous-octopus/

  2. "Blue-ringed Octopuses, Hapalochlaena maculosa." Marinebio.org retrieved October 15, 2019. There are at least 10 species of tiny blue-ringed octopuses, which, ironically for their size, are the most deadly of all cephalopods. Two well-known examples are the lesser (Southern) blue-ringed octopuses, Hapalochlaena maculosa (Hoyle, 1883), and the greater blue-ringed octopuses, Hapalochlaena lunulata, (Quoy and Gaimard, 1832). The common name comes from the bright blue rings that appear when they are alarmed. https://marinebio.org/species/blue-ringed-octopuses/hapalochlaena-maculosa/

The bite of a blue-ringed octopus is one of the deadliest the world has to offer — and it comes in an ounce-sized, squishy, package. https://allthatsinteresting.com/blue-ringed-octopus-bite
  4. "The Blue-Ringed Octopus: Small but Deadly." Erin Spencer, Oceanconservancy.com. March 13, 2017. At first glance, the blue-ringed octopus looks perfectly innocuous. Its psychedelic coloring and pint-sized packaging make it seem more adorable than alarming. But don’t let its cuddly exterior fool you: this tiny octopus can kill you. And quickly. https://oceanconservancy.org/blog/2017/03/13/the-blue-ringed-octopus-small-but-deadly/

  6. "Southern Blue-Ringed Octopus Hapalochlaena maculosa." Oceana.org, retrieved October 15, 2019. The four species of blue-ringed octopuses are small predators that live in tide pools and shallow rocky reefs throughout the western Pacific and Indian oceans. They reach lengths (including the arms) of only 8-10 inches (20-25 cm) and are named for the bright blue circles that they display on their bodies and arms. They are one of the most venomous octopus species in the world. https://oceana.org/marine-life/cephalopods-crustaceans-other-shellfish/southern-blue-ringed-octopus

The octopus is a soft-bodied, eight-limbed mollusc of the order Octopoda. Around 300 species are recognised, and the order is grouped within the class Cephalopoda with squids, cuttlefish, and nautiloids. Like other cephalopods, the octopus is bilaterally symmetric with two eyes and a beak, with its mouth at the center point of the eight limbs ("tentacle" is used as an umbrella term for cephalopod limbs; however, within a teuthological context, "arm" is used to refer to such limbs while "tentacle" is reserved for feeding appendages not found on octopuses). The soft body can rapidly alter its shape, enabling octopuses to squeeze through small gaps. They trail their eight appendages behind them as they swim. The siphon is used both for respiration and for locomotion, by expelling a jet of water. Octopuses have a complex nervous system and excellent sight, and are among the most intelligent and behaviourally diverse of all invertebrates.
Octopuses inhabit various regions of the ocean, including coral reefs, pelagic waters, and the seabed; some live in the intertidal zone and others at abyssal depths. Most species grow quickly, mature early, and are short-lived. During breeding, the male uses a specially adapted arm to deliver a bundle of sperm directly into the female's mantle cavity, after which he becomes senescent and dies. The female deposits fertilised eggs in a den and cares for them until they hatch, after which she also dies. Strategies to defend themselves against predators include the expulsion of ink, the use of camouflage and threat displays, the ability to jet quickly through the water and hide, and even deceit. All octopuses are venomous, but only the blue-ringed octopuses are known to be deadly to humans.
Octopuses appear in mythology as sea monsters like the Kraken of Norway and the Akkorokamui of the Ainu, and probably the Gorgon of ancient Greece. A battle with an octopus appears in Victor Hugo's book Toilers of the Sea, inspiring other works such as Ian Fleming's Octopussy. Octopuses appear in Japanese erotic art, shunga. They are eaten and considered a delicacy by humans in many parts of the world, especially the Mediterranean and the Asian seas. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Octopus

Squid are cephalopods in the superorder Decapodiformes with elongated bodies, large eyes, eight arms and two tentacles. Like all other cephalopods, squid have a distinct head, bilateral symmetry, and a mantle. They are mainly soft-bodied, like octopuses, but have a small internal skeleton in the form of a rod-like gladius or pen, made of chitin.
Squid diverged from other cephalopods during the Jurassic and occupy a similar role to teleost fish as open water predators of similar size and behaviour. They play an important role in the open water food web. The two long tentacles are used to grab prey and the eight arms to hold and control it. The beak then cuts the food into suitable size chunks for swallowing. Squid are rapid swimmers, moving by jet propulsion, and largely locate their prey by sight. They are among the most intelligent of invertebrates, with groups of Humboldt squid having been observed hunting cooperatively. They are preyed on by sharks, other fish, sea birds, seals and cetaceans, particularly sperm whales.
Squid can change colour for camouflage and signalling. Some species are bioluminescent, using their light for counter-illumination camouflage, while many species can eject a cloud of ink to distract predators.
Squid are used for human consumption with commercial fisheries in Japan, the Mediterranean, the southwestern Atlantic, the eastern Pacific and elsewhere. They are used in cuisines around the world, often known as "calamari". Squid have featured in literature since classical times, especially in tales of giant squid and sea monsters. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Squid

UPDATE

We're gonna keep the MAGIC and the Òrìṣà-Ifá GOING, and we've got NEW PAGES FOR THAT!

Themed credits and links that carry across multiple episodes will be archived at their own PAGES, as the credits and resources grow larger.

Each NEW "Òrìṣà-Ifá" or "BlackGirlMagiccredit/resource will, by the week after its addition, be taken off the weekly credits (unless it's used again as a source) and added to the appropriate page under "
PAGES: Themed/Compiled Resources," in the sidebar for this blog. That way, we'll keep the weekly credits as streamlined and accessible as possible.--beetle
