This week, YOUR META's call-in guest is Prof. Eric Crawford, PhD, of Coastal Carolinas College! He's giving us the basics on the Gullah Geechee culture and how it influenced and can be seen throughout much of modern Black American culture!
And we're ushering in Women's History Month, talking about how and why historical narratives are changed and sanitized, and how that can hinder or help a movement. Plus, we're saluting the efforts of Claudette Colvin and Rosa Parks, and digging deeper into Puerto Rico, the United States's unofficial Fifty-First State!

INTERNATIONAL GULLAH GEECHEE AND AFRICAN DIASPORA CONFERENCE
Join Us | IGGAD 2020: March 4-7, 2020
The Charles W. Joyner Institute for Gullah and African Diaspora Studies at Coastal Carolina University, Conway, South Carolina will be holding its second International Gullah Geeechee and African Diaspora Conference on March 4-7, 2020. This year’s theme will focus on the politics and mechanics of digitizing and preserving the African Diaspora. The IGGAD 2020 conference's theme Without Borders: Tracing the Cultural, Archival and Political African Diaspora will bring together academics and practitioners from interdisciplinary areas of study, who offer their ground-breaking contributions in the form of scholarly papers, films, performances and spoken poetry. We will hold a Gullah Geechee Community Day in collaboration with the City of Conway on Saturday, March 7. Those submitting session proposals will be asked if they would be interested in developing a presentation for general audiences for that community day.

But somehow the narratives we’re taught often grossly misrepresent the history of black people in America. After all, a true and full history of the United States would require a reckoning of a not-so-great country, one that’s mired in hate and fear. [39.57] Excerpt: I want to thank Allah for coming and giving to us our leader and teacher here in America, The Honorable Elijah Muhammad. I want to thank Brother Benjamin at the outset for doing a wonderful job of opening up our eyes and giving us a good preliminary basic understanding of the means and the objectives of The Honorable Elijah Muhammad, and also I am thankful to Allah for bringing so many people out here tonight, especially just before Christmas. You know, it's next to a miracle when you get this many of our people together so close to Christmas interested in anything whatsoever that's serious. And actually what this shows is the change that's taking place among the so-called Negroes not only here in New York but throughout the entire world.
