April 21, 2020: "Half a Show . . . But All-Alive"

ONCE AGAIN, YOUR BLACK META is bringing MAXIMUM AWESOME! Music, Mindful, and META!

Art by Will Lyle, of Thorneater.

This week, YOUR META's halfway to BACK! And we're talking springtime, beluga whales, planting and farming, ethnolinguistics, signalling theory, George Washington Carver, listening to Mustn'ts, and the only thing more beautiful than the Pillars of Creation--

It's been a loooooooooong, plague-ridden month, with more to go. But, just as our chyron would say, if we had one: BACK. STREET'S. BA--uhhhhhh . . . BLACK. META'S. BACK . . . ALRIGHT!

  1. "What Does 'Sold Down The River' Really Mean? The Answer Isn't Pretty." Lakshmi Gandhi, Npr.org. January 27, 2014. For generations, the phrase "sold down the river" has been used to signify a profound betrayal.  "River" was a literal reference to the Mississippi or Ohio rivers. For much of the first half of the 19th century, Louisville, Ky., was one of the largest slave-trading marketplaces in the country. Slaves would be taken to Louisville to be "sold down the river" and transported to the cotton plantations in states further south.  In his 2010 history of the Mississippi River, Wicked River: The Mississippi When It Last Ran Wild journalist Lee Sandlin said "the threat of being 'sold down the river' was seen as tantamount to a death sentence."
  2. "'Who told me to get out?': Beluga whale mimics human speech." Smh.com.au, October 23, 2012. Muffled conversations initially had researchers at a San Diego aquarium baffled, but when a diver thought he was told to get "out" of the water they realised the chatter was coming from a beluga whale.
  3. "Hubble image reveals the mighty baby stars that will probably destroy the 'Pillars of Creation'." Brandon Spektor, Livescience.com. April 12, 20202. Spearing the sky like monolithic elephant trunks, the "Pillars of Creation" are a vast region of star-forming material located in the Eagle Nebula, about 6,000 light-years from Earth. These tendrils of gas and dust, made colorful by the radiation of bright young stars smoldering within, became a Milky Way landmark thanks to an iconic visible-light image taken by the Hubble Space Telescope in 1995. Now, NASA scientists have shared a new view of the pillars, focusing instead on the infrared radiation normally invisible to human eyes. In the new infrared image (also taken by the Hubble Space Telescope), the colorful pillars fade to ghosts of their former selves, revealing a kaleidoscope of newborn stars within the dust.
