Alexander the Great found the philosopher looking attentively at a pile of human bones. Diogenes explained, "I am searching for the bones of your father but cannot distinguish them from those of a slave.”―Diogenes of Sinope

  • It is not that I am mad, it is only that my head is different from yours.―Diogenes of Sinope
  • Of what use is a philosopher who doesn't hurt anybody's feelings?―Diogenes of Sinope
  • It is the privilege of the gods to want nothing, and of godlike men to want little.―Diogenes of Sinope
  • He has the most who is most content with the least.―Diogenes of Sinope

“I have nothing to ask but that you would remove to the other side, that you may not, by intercepting the sunshine, take from me what you cannot give.”―Diogenes of Sinope (when asked by Alexander the Great if he wanted anything)

  • The foundation of every state is the education of its youth.―Diogenes of Sinope
  • The mob is the mother of tyrants.―Diogenes of Sinope
  • We have two ears and one tongue so that we would listen more and talk less.―Diogenes of Sinope
  • When I look upon seamen, men of science and philosophers, man is the wisest of all beings; when I look upon priests and prophets nothing is as contemptible as man.―Diogenes of Sinope

He was seized and dragged off to King Philip, and being asked who he was, replied, "A spy upon your insatiable greed."

  • To one who asked what was the proper time for lunch, he said, “If a rich man, when you will; if a poor man, when you can.”―Diogenes of Sinope
  • Poverty is a virtue which one can teach oneself.―Diogenes of Sinope
  • In a rich man's house there is no place to spit but his face.―Diogenes of Sinope
  • The art of being a slave is to rule one's master.―Diogenes of Sinope

A philosopher named Aristippus, who had quite willingly sucked up to Dionysus and won himself a spot at his court, saw Diogenes cooking lentils for a meal. "If you would only learn to compliment Dionysus, you wouldn't have to live on lentils."  Diogenes replied, "But if you would only learn to live on lentils, you wouldn't have to flatter Dionysus.”―Diogenes of Sinope

  • The only way to gall and fret effectively is for yourself to be a good and honest man.―Diogenes of Sinope
  • You are a simpleton, Hegesias; you do not choose painted figs, but real ones; and yet you pass over the true training and would apply yourself to written rules.―Diogenes of Sinope
  • No man is hurt but by himself.―Diogenes of Sinope

When people laughed at him because he walked backward beneath the portico, he said to them: “Aren't you ashamed, you who walk backward along the whole path of existence, and blame me for walking backward along the path of the promenade?”―Diogenes of Sinope

  • When some one reminded him that the people of Sinope had sentenced him to exile, he said, "And I sentenced them to stay at home.―Diogenes of Sinope

"Trump COWERS In Bunker As America Rises." The Damage Report, Youtube. [9:04] Trump cowers in an underground bunker as America rises during national protests. John Iadarola and Francesca Fiorentini break it down on The Damage Report. "As protests in response to the killing of George Floyd by Minneapolis police officers continued outside the White House, President Donald Trump was reportedly taken into an underground bunker by the Secret Service for about an hour Friday evening. The New York Times first reported that the president was rushed to a bunker on Friday. CNN senior national correspondent Alex Marquardt confirmed that reporting in an appearance live from Washington, D.C. during a program hosted by Don Lemon. Marquardt discussed the protests that had occurred in D.C. and many other cities across America over the past few nights. Like several other cities, D.C. has imposed a curfew, effective at 11:00 pm local time. Marquardt noted that the protest had been peaceful during the day, but expected that it would start to get “violent” and “unruly” as the sun was setting. The National Guard has been deployed in D.C. to help keep order and was continuing to assist D.C. police and federal park service officers specifically in attempting to maintain distance between the protesters and the White House." SAY THEIR NAMES, SAY THEIR NAMES

YMCA Farm Project in Kingston has offered to host a "Say Their Names" Memorial, honoring black lives we have lost to police brutality and racial injustice.

Joy Proctor, based out of Portland, Oregon has originally created and put together this memorial and made her template available to anyone who would like to bring it to their hometown. You can see examples of this coming together across the nation here --> www.instagram.com/saytheirnamesmemorial

"The most unfathomable schools and sages have never attained to the gravity which dwells in the eyes of a baby of three months old. It is the gravity of astonishment at the universe, and astonishment at the universe is not mysticism, but a transcendent common sense. The fascination of children lies in this: that with each of them all things are remade, and the universe is put again upon its trial. As we walk the streets and see below us those delightful bulbous heads, three times too big for the body, which mark these human mushrooms, we ought always to remember that within every one of these heads there is a new universe, as new as it was on the seventh day of creation. In each of those orbs there is a new system of stars, new grass, new cities, a new sea."—G. K. Chesterton

The forthcoming website, SNCC Digital Gateway: Learn From the Past, Organize for the Future, Make Democracy Work (https://snccdigital.org) tells the story of how young SNCC activists united with local communities in the Deep South during the 1960s to take control of their political and economic lives. In it, SNCC veterans, historians of the Movement, archivists, and students weave together grassroots stories, digitized primary source materials held at repositories across the country, and new multi-media productions to bring this history to life for a new generation. 10. "Civil Rights Activist, Kwame Touré (Stokely Carmichael), Part 1 of 3."
  11. CaribNation TV, Youtube. [28:42] THE THOUGHTS AND PHILOSOPHY OF KWAME TOURE. . .  Famed civil rights leader Stokely Carmichael was born in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago. Carmichael's parents immigrated to New York when he was a toddler, leaving him in the care of his grandmother until the age of 11, when he followed his parents to the United States. His mother, Mabel, was a stewardess for a steamship line, and his father, Adolphus, worked as a carpenter by day and a taxi driver by night.   In 1954, at the age of 13, Stokely Carmichael became a naturalized American citizen and his family moved to a predominantly Italian and Jewish neighborhood in the Bronx called Morris Park. Soon Carmichael became the only black member of a street gang called the Morris Park Dukes. In 1956, he passed the admissions test to get into the prestigious Bronx High School of Science, where he was introduced to an entirely different social set—the children of New York City's rich white liberal elite.   Though he had been aware of the American Civil Rights Movement for years, it was not until one night toward the end of high school, when he saw footage of a sit-in on television, that Carmichael felt compelled to join the struggle. He joined the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE), picketed a Woolworth's store in New York and traveled to sit-ins in Virginia and South Carolina.  A stellar student, Carmichael received scholarship offers to a variety of prestigious predominantly white universities after graduating high school in 1960. He chose instead to attend the historically black Howard University in Washington, D.C. There he majored in philosophy, studying the works of Camus, Sartre and Santayana and considering ways to apply their theoretical frameworks to the issues facing the civil rights movement. At the same time, Carmichael continued to increase his participation in the movement itself. While still a freshman in 1961, he went on his first Freedom Ride—an integrated bus tour through the South to challenge the segregation of interstate travel. During that trip, he was arrested in Jackson, Mississippi for entering the "whites only" bus stop waiting room and jailed for 49 days. Undeterred, Carmichael remained actively involved in the civil rights movement throughout his college years, participating in another Freedom Ride in Maryland, a demonstration in Georgia and a hospital workers' strike in New York. He graduated from Howard University with honors in 1964. February 24, 2015. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n8o9SLuGqKw
