Words of WISDOM and RELEVANCE

The King, Gandhi, Franklin, and Orwell Edition

(And one of the Pablos, et al.)

“People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf.”―George Orwell

"When fascism comes to America it will be wrapped in the flag and carrying a cross."―Sinclair Lewis

“Collective fear stimulates herd instinct, and tends to produce ferocity toward those who are not regarded as members of the herd.”―Bertrand Russell

“The horror of the Holocaust is not that it deviated from human norms; the horror is that it didn't. What happened may happen again, to others not necessarily Jews, perpetrated by others, not necessarily Germans. We are all possible victims, possible perpetrators, possible bystanders.”―Yehuda Bauer

“Thou shalt not be a victim, thou shalt not be a perpetrator, but, above all, thou shalt not be a bystander.”―Yehuda Bauer

“See, people with power understand exactly one thing: violence.”―Noam Chomsky

“Poverty is the worst form of violence.”―Mahatma Gandhi

“A revolution is not a dinner party, or writing an essay, or painting a picture, or doing embroidery; it cannot be so refined, so leisurely and gentle, so temperate, kind, courteous, restrained and magnanimous. A revolution is an insurrection, an act of violence by which one class overthrows another.”―Mao Tse-tung

“Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.”―Benjamin Franklin

“It may well be that we will have to repent in this generation. Not merely for the vitriolic words and the violent actions of the bad people, but for the appalling silence and indifference of the good people who sit around and say, Wait on time.”―Martin Luther King Jr.

"Violence only begets violence."Martin Luther King Jr.

“Perhaps the problem is this: when threatened, we pull out our weapon, anger. Then the threat passes or evaporates. But the weapon is still in our hand. And weapons are seductive, even addictive.”―Ursula K. LeGuin

“Just us and the blues kneeling on a neck with the full weight of a man in blue. Eight minutes and forty-six seconds. In extremis, I can’t breathe gives way to asphyxiation, to giving up this world, and then mama, called to, a call to protest, fire, glass, say their names, say their names, white silence equals violence, the violence of again, a militarized police force teargassing, bullets ricochet, and civil unrest taking it, burning it down. Whatever contracts keep us social compel us now to disorder the disorder. Peace. We’re out to repair the future.”―Claudia Rankine

“Everybody is the hero in their own story”―Chadwick Boseman

“Justice is not a qualitative question.”―Dr. Kwame Ture

“I believe that we can craft a brighter reality.”―Riley Johndonnell

Empowering Communities to Reconcile Conflict through Education and the Arts

Neighborhood Site:

Northend Church of Christ 687 Albany Ave.
Hartford, CT 06112

Mission

The Connecticut Center for Nonviolence (CTCN) is a leader in Nonviolence education. We  are dedicated to bringing people from diverse communities together in dialogue and  creative expression to explore the root causes of violence and to learn constructive  methods of developing and applying alternative solutions.

What We Do

Professional Development | Using our internationally recognized Kingian Nonviolence  Conflict Reconciliation curriculum, we offer nonviolence trainings and certification  trainings to professionals in the public and private sector (civic leaders, educators, social  workers, ex-offenders, Government agencies, arts organizations and businesses, etc.).  We have a continued relationship with Vista-AmeriCorps, Institute of Municipal and  Regional Policy at Central Connecticut State University, CREC Schools, The Wilson Gray  YMCA, Blue Hills Civic Association, The Hartford Public Library, the New Haven Police  Department, The New Britain Police Department, Yale University Police Department, and  many other organizations and schools where we provide specialized training.

Specialized Curriculum Design for Schools | We work in schools in an advisory capacity, consulting education administrators on how  to implement Kingian Nonviolence and peace education into their curriculum.

Our trained facilitators, educators and master teaching artists, conduct residencies in  schools from two to nine weeks, utilizing an arts infused curriculum that includes  modules in: Classifying the different types and levels of conflict, Six Principles of  Nonviolence, Analysis of the Six Steps of Nonviolence, an historical perspective of  American Civil Rights Campaigns, role-play, lectures, films and music.

Youth Development at the Community level | The Connecticut Center for Nonviolence is  dedicated to empowering children and young people towards pursuing nonviolence as a  way of life. Our “Peace is Possible” and “ ThinKING” curricula is academically rigorous and  infuses arts education into Kingian Nonviolence training.

Community Arts Based Projects | CTCN has ongoing partnerships with CT Office of the  Arts, L.E.V.A.S. Community Gospel Choir, the 224 EcoSpace, the Long Wharf Theatre and  other Arts Organizations to promote Nonviolence.    Current Programs, Services, Biographies and List of Community Partners available upon request.

Addressing Violence in our Communities

The concentration of violent crimes in the world has implications beyond safety.  Violence cripples development, is divisive and breeds more violence. In Connecticut  particularly in urban areas like Hartford, the rate of violent crimes is persistently high such  that the well being of the economic, social and political structures are affected.  For example: public health issues, gun violence and residential safety issues.

Many of the efforts used to combat violence do not address prevention, responding  mostly to symptoms after the fact without a concerted sustained process that invites  buy-in from all constituents.

CTCN uses Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s vision of nonviolence to promote lasting civic  engagement at all community levels. This includes extensive programming, from the  development and presentation of original, innovative conflict reconciliation training-to  arts integrated programming.

FDA (Food and Drug Administration)

WARNING!

METHANOL IN MANY HAND-SANITIZER BRANDS

[7-2-2020] FDA is warning consumers and health care providers that the agency has seen a sharp increase in hand sanitizer products that are labeled to contain ethanol (also known as ethyl alcohol) but that have tested positive for methanol contamination. Methanol, or wood alcohol, is a substance that can be toxic when absorbed through the skin or ingested and can be life-threatening when ingested... .

Consumers who have been exposed to hand sanitizer containing methanol and are experiencing symptoms should seek immediate treatment for potential reversal of toxic effects of methanol poisoning. Substantial methanol exposure can result in nausea, vomiting, headache, blurred vision, permanent blindness, seizures, coma, permanent damage to the nervous system or death. Although all persons using these products on their hands are at risk for methanol poisoning, young children who accidently [sic] ingest these products and adolescents and adults who drink these products as an alcohol (ethanol) substitute, are most at risk.

SAY THEIR NAMES, SAY THEIR NAMES

YMCA Farm Project in Kingston has offered to host a "Say Their Names" Memorial, honoring black lives we have lost to police brutality and racial injustice.

Joy Proctor, based out of Portland, Oregon has originally created and put together this memorial and made her template available to anyone who would like to bring it to their hometown. You can see examples of this coming together across the nation here --> www.instagram.com/saytheirnamesmemorial

SAY THEIR NAMES, SAY THEIR NAMES.

REPLENISH.
YO.
SPOOOOOOOONZ!

"The most unfathomable schools and sages have never attained to the gravity which dwells in the eyes of a baby of three months old. It is the gravity of astonishment at the universe, and astonishment at the universe is not mysticism, but a transcendent common sense. The fascination of children lies in this: that with each of them all things are remade, and the universe is put again upon its trial. As we walk the streets and see below us those delightful bulbous heads, three times too big for the body, which mark these human mushrooms, we ought always to remember that within every one of these heads there is a new universe, as new as it was on the seventh day of creation. In each of those orbs there is a new system of stars, new grass, new cities, a new sea."—G. K. Chesterton

The TL;DR of Dialectic(s) | Dialectical Method: Within Hegelianism, the word dialectic has the specialised meaning of a contradiction between ideas that serves as the determining factor in their relationship. Dialectic comprises three stages of development: first, the thesis, a statement of an idea; second, the antithesis, a reaction that contradicts or negates the thesis; and third, the synthesis, a statement through which the differences between the two points are resolved. Dialectical materialism, a theory or set of theories produced mainly by Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels, adapted the Hegelian dialectic into arguments regarding traditional materialism. 1. "Finn." Starwars.fandom.com. Finn, formerly designated FN-2187 ("Eight-Seven"), was a Force-sensitive human male stormtrooper who served the First Order until his desertion and subsequent defection to the Resistance during the First Order–Resistance war. Though trained since birth to be a loyal and obedient soldier, FN-2187's conscience conflicted with the methods of the First Order. For a time he was unwilling to support the Resistance, hoping to escape the galactic conflict instead of fighting for a cause he believed was doomed to fail. As the galaxy became consumed by war, the renegade trooper was ultimately forced to decide where his true loyalties lay. Accessed August 23, 2020. https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Finn
  2. "Stormtrooper (First Order)." Starwars.fandom.com. Stormtroopers, also known as First Order stormtroopers or "bucketheads," were the elite soldiers of the First Order. As the latest evolution of one of galactic history's most distinctive symbols of military might, the First Order's infantry units were outfitted with stark white armor derived from that worn by the Galactic Republic's clone troopers and the Galactic Empire's stormtroopers. To ensure absolute loyalty and conformity, First Order troopers were identified by alphanumeric designations instead of individual names and programmed from birth through regular exposure to state-controlled propaganda. Ultimately, members of this new generation of stormtroopers were trained to serve one purpose—conquering the galaxy in the name of the First Order.
