  1. "Autistic burnout, explained." Sarah Deweerdt, Spectrumnew.org. ‘Autistic burnout’ is the intense physical, mental or emotional exhaustion, often accompanied by a loss of skills, that some adults with autism experience. Many autistic people say it results mainly from the cumulative effect of having to navigate a world that is designed for neurotypical people. Burnout may especially affect autistic adults who have strong cognitive and language abilities and are working or going to school with neurotypical people. [Audio file of article on page] March 30, 2020. https://www.spectrumnews.org/news/autistic-burnout-explained/
  2. "Autistic fatigue - a guide for autistic adults." Autism.org.uk, accessed December 29, 2020. Exhaustion (fatigue) and then burnout can happen to anybody. Being autistic can make fatigue and burnout more likely, due to the pressures of social situations and sensory overload. If you are experiencing fatigue or burnout, managing your energy levels is essential, as this guide explains. https://www.autism.org.uk/advice-and-guidance/topics/mental-health/autistic-fatigue/autistic-adults
  3. "Autistic Burnout: An Often-Misunderstood Element of Autism." Emily Swaim, Goodtherapy.org. During an autistic person’s life, there may be times when they seem to lose skills or show more obvious signs of autism. For example, a toddler who had a vocabulary of a dozen words may stop talking altogether. A social teenager may find it harder to make appropriate eye contact or take turns in conversation, despite having learned these skills as a child. This phenomenon is called autistic burnout (or autistic regression, depending on the source). Autistic burnout can be very distressing for the autistic individual and their family, especially if they don’t know what is happening. However, it is important to note that autistic burnout is not necessarily an omen of permanent regression or skill loss. Recovery is possible. 4. '“Having All of Your Internal Resources Exhausted Beyond Measure and Being Left with No Clean-Up Crew”: Defining Autistic Burnout.' Raymaker, et al. LAY SUMMARY: Why was this study done? Autistic burnout is talked about a lot by autistic people but has not been formally addressed by researchers. It is an important issue for the autistic community because it is described as leading to distress; loss of work, school, health, and quality of life; and even suicidal behavior. What was the purpose of this study? This study aimed to characterize autistic burnout, understand what it is like, what people think causes it, and what helps people recover from or prevent it. It is a first step in starting to understand autistic burnout well enough to address it. [PDF: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7313636/pdf/aut.2019.0079.pdf]. 5. "Alexithymia: What It’s Like to Not Know How You Feel." Yo Samdy Sam, Neuroclastic.com. It has nothing to do with being reluctant to share your feelings or having a “stiff upper lip” and not wanting to talk about emotions, rather, alexithymia renders you frequently unable to identify what it is you’re feeling at all, let alone describe it to another person. It is often described as “emotional blindness” but I believe this is a simplification, and as someone with alexithymia myself, I would better call it something like “emotional illiteracy”. 6. "The Art of Masking: Women with Autism." Charlotte Egeskov, Tiimoapp.com. What is masking? Masking or camouflaging is artificially ‘perform’ social behavior that is deemed to be more ‘neurotypical’ or hiding behavior that might be viewed as socially unacceptable (1). The motivations for masking symptoms of autism includes fitting in and increasing connections with others. Masking itself is comprised of a combination of camouflaging and compensation techniques where the individual is able to control impulses, act ‘neurotypical’, rehearse answers to questions or conversations and mimic others. The short- and long-term consequences of masking includes “exhaustion, challenging stereotypes, and threats to self-perception” (2). Women and girls with autism are masking their conditions to such a degree that they risk late or missed diagnosis. Masking symptoms of autism may help socially and professionally but may also harm the individuals in the process. March 8, 2019. https://www.tiimoapp.com/blog/art-of-masking-women-with-autism/

  8. "Difficulty identifying emotions linked to poor mental health in autistic people." Laura Dattaro, Spectrumnews.org. Roughly half of autistic people experience alexithymia, which translates to ‘no words for emotions’ and is characterized by difficulties with identifying and describing one’s own feelings2. Non-autistic people with severe alexithymia are likely to have trouble with interpersonal relationships and are at increased risk for anxiety or depression, both of which frequently co-occur with autism. But little research has examined how alexithymia affects the mental health of autistic people over time. 7. "What Is Autistic Burnout - The Reality of Autism Burnout." IndieAndy, Youtube. [7:33] Autistic burnout is where autistic people have reached their limit on a physical, mental and emotional level. Some might call it autistic regression & people have said that burnout makes people "more autistic". In today's video, I talk openly and honestly about my autism burnout experiences, what autistic burnout is and some tips to manage burnout.  The reality of autism burnout is very real where it leaves some autistic people feeling vulnerable, unsure of themselves & feeling depressed. These autism burnout symptoms can make daily activities, daily tasks even more challenging to cope with.    I have experienced autism burnout a few times over the last few years and it is a trait of autism I truly dislike. Because autism burnout makes me feel very tired, less able to cope with simple tasks that I've done millions of times before. I feel more agitated which causes more meltdowns for me which is not pleasant.    Coping with autism burnout is something I am still trying to do but I have a few tips for autistic burnout which do help me.  Give yourself time.  Don't take a lot on during burnout.  Make time for you.  Maybe look into energy accounting to help you balance out what you put your energy into.  Have you got any tips of how to handle autism burnout? Let's us all know in the comments. May 21, 2020. https://youtu.be/_wMJD09aJAQ

In this video, we will be discussing autism and executive dysfunction which is a set cognitive functions. What the areas of executive dysfunction are and how we can help autistic people who are dealing with executive functioning symptoms. What is executive functioning? Executive functions are a set of cognitive processes that are necessary for the control of behaviours. Which include selecting and successfully monitoring behaviors that allow you to achieve goals but also allow you plan and organise these goals. This is done by being able to shift between tasks and multitasking. However executive dysfunction is the difficulty in being able to perform these executive functions which affects people with autism, ADHD, learning disabilites as well as brain injuries and strokes. 1. "Autism." Tania Melnyczuk, Tania.co.za. Autism is an umbrella term for a specific cluster of neurodevelopmental endophenotypes — or more accurately, a cluster of clusters. A longer definition will not be forthcoming on this blog anytime soon. (I have other priorities.) April 19, 2019. https://tania.co.za/glossary/autism/
  2. "Behaviour is communication (or not)." Tania Melnyczuk, Tania.com.za. “Behaviour is communication.” This is a popular saying in the autism industry, and it’s used by both sides of the behaviourist debate: those who want to stop autistic people from behaving autistically, and those who accept alternative ways of being and communicating. But the notion that all behaviour is communication is problematic. Some people’s autistic meltdowns look much the same whether they’re in public or private.
