June 2, 2020: "Oh, Mary, Don’t You Weep"

Art by Will Lyle, of Thorneater.
The revolution continues and builds, and YOUR META is HERE FOR EVERY MINUTE OF IT.

"Who will guard the guards themselves?" / Who watches the Watchmen? / Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?
Juvenal

"There is only one way to handle looters and arsonists during a riot and that is to shoot them on sight. I've let the word filter down: When the looting starts the shooting starts."—Walter E. Headley (while accusing "young hoodlums, from 15 to 21", of taking "advantage of the civil rights campaign" in 1967), Miami Police Department

Amazing Social Media Responses to Anti-Protest Sentiment:

  • May 28: 'Stop complaining about “riots.” Riots gave you 8-hour wordays, gay rights, and free speech.

  • May 29: "The National Guard has marched against US citizens a total of 12 times. 8 of them were in response to segregation protests, 2 were riots over police violence, and 1 to stop riots in the aftermath of MLK's assassination. They're almost exclusively called against black citizens."

  • May 29: "Never forget that a black journalist was arrested before the police officer who killed George Floyd."

  • May 29: "I think it was Lenin who said: There are decades where we fuck around, and weeks where we find out."

  • May 30: "Problem with telling people to vote is a lot of people don’t believe in our electoral system. And for good reason. And since the rate of Black voters in every election is higher than the rate of Americans who vote FULL-STOP. Yet we haven’t been able to vote out racism and all its attendant evils."

"Trump COWERS In Bunker As America Rises." The Damage Report, Youtube. [9:04] Trump cowers in an underground bunker as America rises during national protests. John Iadarola and Francesca Fiorentini break it down on The Damage Report. "As protests in response to the killing of George Floyd by Minneapolis police officers continued outside the White House, President Donald Trump was reportedly taken into an underground bunker by the Secret Service for about an hour Friday evening. The New York Times first reported that the president was rushed to a bunker on Friday. CNN senior national correspondent Alex Marquardt confirmed that reporting in an appearance live from Washington, D.C. during a program hosted by Don Lemon. Marquardt discussed the protests that had occurred in D.C. and many other cities across America over the past few nights. Like several other cities, D.C. has imposed a curfew, effective at 11:00 pm local time. Marquardt noted that the protest had been peaceful during the day, but expected that it would start to get “violent” and “unruly” as the sun was setting. The National Guard has been deployed in D.C. to help keep order and was continuing to assist D.C. police and federal park service officers specifically in attempting to maintain distance between the protesters and the White House." Police in many cities responded with extreme force, targeting protesters, members of the media and even children in what Princeton scholar Keeanga-Yamahtta Taylor characterizes as a "national police riot." And police appear to be attacking both protesters and reporters who are covering the George Floyd protests.  WCCO photojournalist Tom Aviles was shot with a rubber bullet, forced to the ground, and arrested before being freed hours later in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Police fired pepper balls at a crew with WAVE 3 News in Louisville, Kentucky. [13:40] This past year has seen an enormous amount of attention paid to the toxic divide between police departments and the poor, black communities they serve. One thing we’ve learned is that tribal loyalty often prevents police officers from criticizing each other or their departments publicly—and at least sometimes, they lie when one of their own faces charges of misconduct. That’s why the recent emergence of Michael Wood Jr., a retired Baltimore cop, as a critic of law enforcement culture landed with impact: His voice was the relatively rare one that spoke with the knowledge of an insider but the unforgiving skepticism of an outsider.  In this video, you’ll meet Wood while he drives the streets of the city where he served as a police officer for 11 years, and hear him lay out his conception of what’s going wrong in the world of policing and how it could be made right. [4:55] As continuous protests over the police killing of George Floyd are met with further police violence, calls are mounting to defund police departments across the country. In many major cities like Philadelphia, Chicago, Los Angeles and New York, police departments absorb nearly a third of the budget, and Professor Keeanga-Yamahtta Taylor says the reprioritization of resource distribution is urgent. "Public schools, public hospitals, public libraries, all of the things that make a city function — those have been systematically defunded, increasingly privatized," says Taylor. "Because of the COVID crisis, every city is talking about massive budget cuts — but not to the police. The police almost never have to incur layoffs. They almost never have to incur budget cuts, because they are seen as the public policy of last resort." June 1, 2020. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wAwRMNGPiqw

[3:03] In US news and current events today, the Black Lives Matter protests have continued to boil over in over 140 cities across the US. Most stories you see are of riots, looting, and police brutality, but the George Floyd protests have been predominantly peaceful, and these Black Lives Matter protesters have come up with creative ways to have their voices heard in a peaceful manner.   From the Cupid Shuffle dance to taking a knee in powerful moments of silence, peaceful protesters are simply trying to make a difference in the world and fight for racial justice, equality, and against police brutality. The BLM protests have opened the eyes of the world to injustice, and as the unrest continues, we should focus on the vast majority of peaceful protestors instead of the few bad actors trying to turn a beautiful movement into a riot. It played a significant role in Adolf Hitler's rise to power in the 1920s and 1930s. Its primary purposes were providing protection for Nazi rallies and assemblies, disrupting the meetings of opposing parties, fighting against the paramilitary units of the opposing parties, especially the Red Front Fighters League (Rotfrontkämpferbund) of the Communist Party of Germany (KPD), and intimidating Romani, trade unionists, and, especially, Jews – for instance, during the 1933 Nazi boycott of Jewish businesses. The SA were colloquially called "Brownshirts" (Braunhemden), from the color of their uniform shirts, similar to Benito Mussolini's blackshirts. Brown-colored shirts were chosen as the SA uniform because a large number of them were cheaply available after World War I, having originally been ordered during the war for colonial troops posted to Germany's former African colonies. The SA developed pseudo-military titles for its members, with ranks that were later adopted by several other Nazi Party groups, chief amongst them the Schutzstaffel (SS). The SS originated as a branch of the SA before being separated. After Adolf Hitler ordered the "blood purge" of 1934, he withdrew support from the SA. This event became known as the Night of the Long Knives (die Nacht der langen Messer). The SA continued to exist, but was effectively superseded by the SS, although the paramilitary forces were not formally dissolved until after Nazi Germany's final capitulation to the Allies in 1945. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sturmabteilung
