"Trump COWERS In Bunker As America Rises." The Damage Report, Youtube. [9:04] Trump cowers in an underground bunker as America rises during national protests. John Iadarola and Francesca Fiorentini break it down on The Damage Report. "As protests in response to the killing of George Floyd by Minneapolis police officers continued outside the White House, President Donald Trump was reportedly taken into an underground bunker by the Secret Service for about an hour Friday evening. The New York Times first reported that the president was rushed to a bunker on Friday. CNN senior national correspondent Alex Marquardt confirmed that reporting in an appearance live from Washington, D.C. during a program hosted by Don Lemon. Marquardt discussed the protests that had occurred in D.C. and many other cities across America over the past few nights. Like several other cities, D.C. has imposed a curfew, effective at 11:00 pm local time. Marquardt noted that the protest had been peaceful during the day, but expected that it would start to get “violent” and “unruly” as the sun was setting. The National Guard has been deployed in D.C. to help keep order and was continuing to assist D.C. police and federal park service officers specifically in attempting to maintain distance between the protesters and the White House." "The most unfathomable schools and sages have never attained to the gravity which dwells in the eyes of a baby of three months old. It is the gravity of astonishment at the universe, and astonishment at the universe is not mysticism, but a transcendent common sense. The fascination of children lies in this: that with each of them all things are remade, and the universe is put again upon its trial. As we walk the streets and see below us those delightful bulbous heads, three times too big for the body, which mark these human mushrooms, we ought always to remember that within every one of these heads there is a new universe, as new as it was on the seventh day of creation. In each of those orbs there is a new system of stars, new grass, new cities, a new sea."—G. K. Chesterton

  1. "What you need to unlearn about U.S. history to understand Juneteenth." Democracy Now!, Youtube. [4:19] June 19 is Juneteenth, celebrating the day in 1865 when the last enslaved Black people in the United States learned they had been freed from bondage. The news arrived in Galveston, Texas, two and a half years after Lincoln issued the famous Emancipation Proclamation. History professor Gerald Horne says that understanding Juneteenth in its full historical context requires unlearning and relearning some of the foundational pillars of conventional U.S. history — including the 1775 Revolutionary War against the British and the 1863 Emancipation Proclamation. "A motive force against British rule was in regards to preserving the system of enslavement, which is why the Confederates in 1861 considered themselves to be walking in the footsteps of real estate speculator George Washington," says Horne. He also says the Emancipation Proclamation was primarily "a war-fighting measure. It did not necessarily extend to slaveholders who remained true to the Lincoln government." 2. "Juneteenth Is Finally Entering the Mainstream American Consciousness. Now Make It An Official Federal Holiday." The Root Staff, Theroot.com. [3:32] Forget the 4th of July! Juneteenth is the day that should be celebrated by all as a pivotal point in America’s freedom story. One-hundred-and-fifty-five years ago this year, the last of the enslaved black population in Galveston, Texas received word that they were officially free. Despite the passing of the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, which technically ended slavery on paper, there were still 250,000 enslaved people in Texas alone who had yet to learn of their newfound freed status until June 19, 1865. Thus, Juneteenth was born. June 17, 2020. https://www.theroot.com/juneteenth-is-finally-entering-the-mainstream-american-1844065083

[15:53] June 19 is Juneteenth, celebrating the day in 1865 when the last enslaved Black people in the United States learned they had been freed from bondage. As momentum grows to enshrine it as a national holiday, we speak with author and historian Gerald Horne, who says that while the story of Juneteenth is “much more complicated and much more complex than is traditionally presented,” increased recognition of the day “provides an opportunity to have a thorough remembrance of this horrific system that was slavery.” June 19, 2020. https://youtu.be/h50o2YSznk0
  4. [Referenced / resourced, but not aired in segment] "This Is Why Juneteenth Matters | NowThis." NowThis News, Youtube. [3:37] In US news and current events today, June 19, 1865, marked the end of slavery and a turning point for Black Americans — here's why Juneteenth should be recognized as an official holiday, according to NAACP President Derrick Johnson.  What is Juneteenth? Many white Americans have never heard of this holiday, which marked a turning point in the end of slavery and celebrates the day that slavery was abolished in many states at the end of the Civil War. After the police killing of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Rayshard Brooks, and countless other Black people in America, the resulting George Floyd protests and Black Lives Matter protests against police brutality, police racism, and police violence have put systemic racism in the spotlight as BLM protesters take to the streets in support of police reform, racial justice and civil rights. The BLM protests and resulting dialogue has led to new awareness of Juneteenth, explained by many companies taking a stand and recognizing the Juneteenth holiday after decades of silence. Any Juneteenth explanation will be difficult to capture the complex emotions the holiday represents, but either way, it's good and important that Junteenth is finally being recognized.
